We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.” – Rainer Maria Riike

This quote hit me like a ton of bricks when I first read it at the end of the film Jojo Rabbit, and it continues to ring true for me to this day. In 2020, like the rest of the world, my life was drastically altered by the pandemic and it led to a series of events that put my life on a path for the better; even if I didn’t realize it at the time. Those events were mostly tragic, to say the least, and I felt like there would be no good to come of the pain. But then I began to concentrate that heartache toward my art and apply it to the music, which in turn helped me to heal in a way I had forgotten was possible. I was introduced to an amazing community of like-minded individuals who have accepted me and allowed me to grow into the most realized version of myself I have ever seen. Throughout all of that sorrow and terror, I simply kept going. And I was rewarded for it with incredible friends and a sense of self-worth. It’s easy to get lost in the moment sometimes when things are at their darkest, but it’s important for us to be able to lean on our loved ones for comfort during those trials and take solace in the reassurance that life does indeed go on because no feeling is final.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always have a hard time answering people when they ask me what kind of music I make. To look at me, they usually assume it’s in the vein of metal or rock, and that is definitely a valid assumption because I take a huge amount of inspiration from that music. But I also do things within the Hip Hop, EDM, and Jazz genres as well. I’ve never fully felt at home within music scenes over the years, due to all the genre lines that had been drawn by the people within. I grew up listening to all kinds of artists like Green Day, Prince, DMX, The Cure, Dead Kennedys, and pretty much everything in between. When it comes time to write, I usually draw from all of these influences and make it work for whatever fits the track. The producers I decide to work with inspire me with their beats and I go from there, it has to excite me or I move on. Even though I tend to leave a lot of things to the professionals, I’m currently working on bettering my mixing/mastering techniques, which has been challenging but a lot of fun as well. It’s just about enjoying the process really, I use my art to take away stress, not add to it. If anything, I hope to inspire others to just get up and pursue whatever they’re interested in, you never know what will come of it. The worst that can happen is you learn something new.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite burger joint is a place called Grill Em All in Alhambra, CA. Metalhead owned and operated, they got Slayer on the speakers and cool movies playing on the TV when you walk in, great beer, it’s amazing. In Altadena, there’s the Enchanted Forest, which is a really neat hiking trail with a creepy house on the property known as the Cobb Estate, great place for photography. Tons of breweries in the area, you really can’t go wrong wherever you end up. There’s live music pretty much any night of the week in LA, so there are plenty of venues to choose from. And of course, you’ve got the Pasadena Playhouse which screens a bunch of awesome movies like Possession and even music documentaries!
