We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Boles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve been an entrepreneur going on 11 years now. Building brands seems like something I was born to do. It’s been a lot of hard work of 80+ hour weeks for years, but it’s never truly felt like work. I created Avintiv Media out of pure necessity. My thought process was simple: it was a business model that I needed for my other companies, and I saw a need in the market place for a boutique agency that actually cared about helping businesses grow. At the time of launching Avintiv Media, I had an eCommerce activewear company and a manufacturing company. I kept getting burned by contract workers and other agencies. It seemed like every time I turned around; I was getting screwed out of money. I decided to learn graphic design, coding, web design, and SEO on my own. I started to rebuild my eCommerce company with everything I was learning, and that’s when everything changed. I had countless friends and local business owners reaching out to get an introduction to the company helping us. It was me doing all of it, and at that moment, a light bulb went off. I realized that I would be able to build an agency that does this full time for businesses and change their lives. The impact seemed much bigger than making people look and feel good with clothing. I’m so glad I made the pivot because we have helped hundreds of people over the past few years. The impact and difference we’ve been able to make in the world is amazing. I go to bed every night, knowing that our agency is actually making a difference.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the Founder & CEO of Avintiv Media. Avintiv Media is an award-winning boutique digital marketing agency located in Scottsdale, AZ that provides branding, website design & development, SEO, and digital marketing solutions to brands that want to grow! We’re an agency filled with hustlers, visionaries, creators, designers, and marketers that do one thing: GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! Quality is at the core that fuels our agency. What sets us apart from others in our industry is experience with building brands. I’ve been a business consultant for 10 years now and have built and scaled over 250 brands within those 10 years. We’ve worked with clients like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati and key people on our team working directly with major brands like Coca Cola. We aren’t the typical agency that “tries” to deliver services and “hope” that we grow your business. We understand the core fundamentals of how every type of business operates. When we’re building a brand’s identity, logo, or website – we utilize years of experience to perfect their identity to speak directly to their ideal customers. When we’re building marketing or SEO campaigns, we fully understand where their customers are in their buyer’s journey. Key components like that allow us to have a high level of success for our clients. I’m most proud of the culture we’ve been able to build at Avintiv Media. We have a non-corporate structure but have plenty of processes to make sure productivity is through the roof while our team is still happy and enjoying their work. Building and growing Avintiv Media has been by far the hardest business I’ve ever built. An agency is 2-3 business models in one. You have to master your internal business (accounting, branding, legal, messaging, operations, processes, systems, HR, team, marketing, sales) on top of running and managing your client’s brands. It usually takes 6-10 years before an agency fully blossoms as it should. We’re currently 4 years in and doing a lot better than we had hoped for. I was able to deal with the challenges of being an entrepreneur for over 10 years. I started my first company when being an “entrepreneur” wasn’t cool or sexy. I got made fun of all the time in college for it. So with that said, tenacity and grit over the years allow you to attack any problem or challenge you’re faced with.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a great question as I just had my mom visit for a whole week. I would most definitely spend at least two days up in Sedona towards the end of their trip so it can end with recharging, positive vibes, and beautiful scenery. For eating and drinking, I would take them to AZ 88, The Chelsea, True Foods, Eggstasy, Steak 44, Second Story, etc. I’m very big on getting outdoors when it’s not too hot out so there would be a lot done with outdoor activities. I also love doing things like Top Golf, Dave and Busters, or GoCarts.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I learned a lot about growing my agency from two close friends who have been mentors to me over the years, Josh Elizetxe (Josh Snow) and Anthony Sarandrea. I read a lot of books so the top books that have made the greatest impact are: Built to Sell, Traction, Rocket Fuel, Pitch Anything, The Power of Now, Shoe Dog, etc.
