We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
Just4Sports is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting basketball as an means for young athletes to build self-confidence, self esteem, physical health, and positive body image both on and off the court. Young athletes, both boys and girls, will be given the opportunity to improve their athletic skills by participating in tournaments, leagues, camps, and clubs provided through this organization.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If you are in a gym during the weekend competing in a basketball tournament or league you will usually find that little guy with the big smile standing in the gym – Justin Peterson Driven by his passion for basketball, Justin founded Just4sports, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization in 2018 with a small group of individuals who had a shared commitment to serve the best interests of children in Arizona. Mr. Peterson was an instrumental part of Basketball Congress International (BCI’s) success back in the early 1990’s. When, BCI, sponsors of the nation’s premier youth basketball tournaments, moved to Dallas, Texas, Justin wanted to keep youth basketball going in Arizona. His extensive background and interest in both sports and nonprofit volunteerism, led to the creation of Just4sports. Just4sports is dedicated to helping promote basketball and (other sports) as an outlet for youth athletes, both boys and girls, to build self-confidence and self-esteem both on and off the court. 2020 will be an exciting year for Just4sports as it has expanded its programs from basketball tournaments to other youth serving programs related to health, sports, exercise and life skills initiatives. Just4sports provides an avenue for all interested youth to utilize sports as a means to keeping kids off the streets, staying healthy and finding their passion. Play safe. Be safe. Have fun and make it home safe. Just4sports is a community leader when it comes to basketball. Justin has been involved with the growth of the Mesa Family YMCA youth basketball program, the Desert Duel Memorial tournament, Summer Sizzle Tournaments and the Invitational Basketball Series in Mesa, Arizona. If you are in a gym during the weekend competing in a basketball tournament or league you will usually find that little guy with the big smile standing in the gym – Smile back!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! If I had a friend visit for a week I would definitely take them on a journey to Sedona and slide rock. The open air along with the beautiful rock formations and the slow-flowing water is absolutely amazing. We would then head to Jerome, Ariz., and visit the Gold King Mine Museum and Ghost town. The little mom-and-pop ice cream shop is off the charts. I love throwing pennies in the wishing well! With the day winding down we would head back to Phoenix for a relaxing evening at the Duce (525 S. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ. 85004) which is a retro-chic warehouse housing a vintage camper serving American comfort food, plus an art deco bar. We can’t forget basketball, so we would catch a college game and by this time the evening would start to wind down.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank all the coaches, players and parents that continue to support Just4sports. Our main purpose is “Keeping Kids off the Streets” and we are able to accomplish our vision with league and tournaments and clinics throughout the year. Sports is very important for children to learn teamwork and self-discipline while continuing to help build character. Health is also very important in todays society and Just4sports is able to offer a means for this young athletes to stay healthy and fit.
