We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalin Colvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalin, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
The Bible states that “Your gift will make room for you.” To me, this is a hardcore fact! Everything that I’ve tried to do just to make money… I was unsuccessful in. I’ve tried starting a boutique, selling bundles, nursing school… I can go on and on. None of those worked out and I gave them my ALL. As soon as I try something that I’m already good at doing, people LOVE it. I loved it when Steve Harvey said, “The first step to reaching your full potential is to understand the difference between your talent and your gift.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other stylists is that I live by the motto “healthy hair over the style of hair.” I don’t focus on how it looks. My main goal is health & length. So many of my beautiful black queens have this idea that long healthy hair isn’t associated with our race. When in fact, our hair grows beautifully. The main thing that often prohibits this from happening is the lack of natural hair stylists and lack of hair regimens based on a persons individual hair needs. This is the problem I aim to solve. I got to where I am today by faith and destroying fear. I already had a plan but I literally was “standing in my own way.” I knew that I had the knowledge on how to grow and maintain healthy hair because I was able to do so on my own hair. My hair was terribly damaged and now I’m rocking gorgeous, long and healthy strands. Was it easy? Absolutely not. It takes patience, determination, and consistency. The lessons that I learned through this process were mainly about running a business. The main cocktail to my business taking off so quickly is that I sat down and thought of all the negative things I didn’t like about other hairstylists… So I tried to do the opposite while bringing something new and fresh to Arizona. I learned that that was the key. I want others to know that I genuinely care about hair. Everything about it! I plan on taking healthy hair to the next level by providing products, tools, styles, etc. so that I can assist in decreasing all the beautiful women in the world that are ashamed/hate their hair.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to lake Saguaro. Mainly because people have this idea that we don’t have large bodies of water here. Also because I love to be around water and that lake is just beautiful! We’d take some risks at the Odesey Aquarium swimming with the sting rays. It’s a must that we do hot air ballooning because I was terrified to do it, and found out that it’s one of the best experiences that I’ve had here. I’d definitely have to share that peaceful experience. I’d order food from the best chef in town, Chef Lavish and then we would taste wine at Winery 101. I also love virtual reality so we’d swing by Modern Round.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout husband and my entire family for supporting me. Most of all, I want to give a special recognition to my sister in-law, Keelaya Triplett. I went through a time where I was literally all over the place as far as what I wanted to do. I literally paid for a lash extension class and everything. She just kept saying over and over “I see you doing hair. You need to do hair!” I had so much doubt and fear about doing hair it was ridiculous! But I wanted to do it sooooooo bad! She just kept pushing me and pushing me. Sometimes people will see your potential even when you can’t. Those are the people you need around you!
