We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexi Villa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lexi, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I’ve always struggled with work life balance, and still think I’m getting the hang of it. Not many people know this, but I’ve been going to school for Respiratory Therapy since April of 2020 and I am about to graduate Feb 02 of 2022. It’s been so difficult balancing my photography, school, and my full time job! I’m very grateful I don’t have any kids depending on me or a partner who needs me around. Nothing wrong with having either of those but I know I would not be able to handle it! It’s been a crazy time, but I’ve found a schedule that works for me. I work night shifts (typically 5pm-5am) and do most of my homework and studying there, then I go to school from 8am to 12pm, and I will nap a few hours before going to work again. I sacrifice seeing my own family a lot but spend my days off watching movies with them. My photography clients have been so AMAZING in working around my crazy schedule. If there’s one thing you should take from this: make time for your small business!!! It can be overwhelming at times, and sometimes you’ll feel like a failure, but it is possible! Believe in yourself and believe in your hustle!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you were going to spend the day with me, I’d make sure you do it RIGHT. Firstly, I was born in Nogales but grew up in Tucson my whole life. I know where the best of the best is. Firstly, we would start the day off by getting food from my favorite stand, Taqueria La Vaca (also known as La Vaquita). The best quesabirrias in town, however truly in love with their red chile burritos. But truly you can’t go wrong there! Everything is SO good. If there is a concert going on, we’d definitely have to hit that next. This can range anyway from a show at The Fox theatre, s mosh pit at The Rialto, or just walking around second Saturday downtown and listening to the local talent. We’d probably finish the day at Reddington Pass, I’d pack a cute picnic and we’d drive as high as we can. We’d pick a good spot, eat some of the burritos we made (probably papas con machaca), and star gaze for a few hours overlooking the city lights and have some deep conversation about our trauma haha. This is the perfect day in Tucson in my opinion.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, there is a character I’d love to shout out. She’s been my main motivation since childhood. Anne Shirley, protagonist of Anne of Green Gables, has always inspired me. She is truly one of the only reason’s I am where I am today. She worked SO HARD to be top of her class and get a scholarship to go to college, back in a time period where women getting education was frowned upon. Truly, whenever I want to give up, I ask myself “Would Anne Shirley give up?” And the answer is always no!!! I aspire everyday to look at the world the way Anne Shirley does, I think everyone should read her story at least once. As she says, “Tomorrow is a new day, with no mistakes in it yet”. And that’s when we can try again with fresh eyes.
