We had the good fortune of connecting with Linga TheBoss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linga, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To me, risks are the first step towards success! Risks are the currency of accomplishment– I have seen evidence in my life time after time that the greatest adventures and the greatest dreams are only realized on the other side of a risk! I’m no longer afraid of stepping out– I know when I step out there is a chance I may fail, but there’s also a chance that I’ll accomplish everything I set out to do! I’m actually more afraid to have lived a comfortable life where I never invested anything costly to see my dreams come to life. I would rather risk everything and fail knowing I at least tried, than go my entire life never trying, and never seeing what could have been. Becoming a christian female rapper in a world where most rappers are men and very few christian rappers have a mainstream influence– especially female christian rappers– was a huge risk for me to take! Yet 5 years in I have seen immense growth in my career and have had incredible opportunities to record music and perform at conferences, most recently a conference in Missouri with more than 15,000 in attendance. Being a speaker in the church world as a young black woman, when most speakers or preachers are white men, involves risk. I’ve thought to myself at times, is my voice needed? Will my voice be valued or effective? But since taking the risk, I have been part of so many significant moments where after speaking at an event, I was able to inspire someone or be part of someone’s story of life change!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The expectation in my family was that I’d become a lawyer or a business woman- but I’ve always been a creative! At the beginning, it wasn’t easy to step away for the mold my family imagined for my life, but I had to stay true to myself. I decided to get a degree in business because I felt it would help me as I progressed in my career, but I never stopped writing music, releasing songs, performing at shows, speaking at events, writing blog posts, and creating Youtube videos. I am passionate about motivating and inspiring people- I’d say its my life goal. I love creating, whether that is a song, or a blog, or content that I am going to speak. But the goal of everything I create is to inspire people to go after their dreams, motivate them to keep pushing in what they’re doing, or to speak life and encourage every person who listens that they were created purposefully and were created to live an abundant life. There are so many negative influences who have large followings in today’s culture, but I want to use my influence to be a positive, wholesome influence! Especially in the rap world, most of the subject matter in rap music is sex and drugs and money– to each their own! But my career is proof that one can avoid all of those subjects and still create quality content!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a big fan of a staycation! I love staying at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess! It is such a beautiful resort- my favorite spot is the sunset beach, because the pool has a white sand beach that makes me feel like I’m on the oceanside. While relaxing, you can order food and drinks and it is an incredible way to relax and rest. Some of my favorite food spots are Modern Market, Zinburger, Cornish Patsy, and The Montauk. For a drink I’m a HUGE fan of boba so I would either go to Zero Degrees or to Bubble Bee. For some fun adventures, I’d go to Evora Jewelry Co. in Gilbert to handcraft a ring, or I’d go kayaking at Lake Pleasant, or I’d go thrifting at Blessings Boutique and Thrift in Mesa!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My brother Abel has always been my biggest supporter– from day one he has believed in my dreams and encouraged me on the days I wanted to give up! He hears all my first ideas and is one of the first to share my new endeavors with everyone he knows. He’s heard every song, read every blog, watched every Youtube video, and watched every performance or speaking event he was able to tune-in to! I’m eternally grateful for the way he has supported me and encouraged me and I wouldn’t be the creative I am if not for him.
