We had the good fortune of connecting with The Zen Bird (Marian Mellen) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marian, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’ve been defining words lately and success is one I defined just the other day. I asked myself what does success mean to me? A life of meaning. So what has brought success (meaning) into business & life? Connection. Service. Community. Support. A heart centered approach has allowed this company, The Zen Bird, to evolve into greater meaning and a clear purpose ~ facilitating safe spaces of love, empathy, understanding and peace. Showing up vulnerably, messy and real (shaking hands and wobbly feet) as this company grows has brought greater trust to those who I am helping (and really, we are helping each other.) It’s an interdependent and symbiotic relationship ~ learning  through love and expanding the capacity to be WITH the human experience.Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What keeps me busy? (aka occupied, intentional and engaged professionally?) Art = heART. A couple of years back I sat next to a man as we departed from LaX. “you must be an artist” he commented. I paused and tilted my head, a ponder ~ am I? Yes, an artist lives from the heART. yes indeed, I am an artist. My heART feels deeply. Deep deep pangs of grief. AND, wild amounts of joy. There is one thing we know in life, we will die. And it’s one of those topics that we don’t seem too comfy talking about. And so, how does one become more attuned to greater meaning in life and living through heART? We expand capacity to experience the full spectrum of our humanness which includes the uncomfortable, the unpleasant, the undesired. & these days, we’re being asked to do this together. less “I’m Good!” and more “It’s been a tough season. my heart is aching. I am afraid.” more heART.If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
mi casa! Come on over friends, I have an open gate policy. meaning, you literally just get to show up. I usually have coffee & tea available. My neighborhood is super cozy & friendly and I live right outside of Melrose. I have two bikes & we can bike together or take a walk along the canal to hit up the funky shops in Melrose ~ some of my favorites : Lux Coffee Shop Joe’s Diner Pho Noodles on 7th Ave Copper Star Coffee Picnics in the backyard or at the park are mmm mmm mmm!Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
oh, YAS! There are thousands I can recognize and give credit to, are ya ready? ~ this company has been building since I can remember. From my classroom days as a Spanish Teacher to the very neighbors next door in my community bringing hot soup to my door just when I am collapsing in grief. My pops ~ a literal heart centered dude who never batted an eye when I would share berserk ideas, instead his eyes started to glimmer in a resounding ‘mmmm, it’s possible Mare’. Mum, an astrology and true steward of the land raised me in the country so I could be deeply rooted in the wisdom of our Great Mother Earth. The midwest deep soul friendships ~ Catdawg & Susan! anchoring me into trust and the practice of slowing. . Zandra Elizabeth, who is an embodied Wild Woman & soul siSTAR and co founder of our next level of the journey Soul Healing TribeZ. The clients and companies. Serena. Mora. Erica. Maria. The friendSHIPS. Sailing together. Pioneering as best we can muster. The birds, the bees, YOGA. It is all connected. Interwoven. A thread through the web. I am simply the physical vessel listening to the wisdom from our planet who is sharing that we are in desperate need to make changes in the way we live. Simplify. Repurpose. Recycle. Less consumption. More intention. Less busy. More being. Less extracting precious resources. More service. Give back. Nourish. Nurture. Look each other in the eyes. Ask more questions. Listen. Expand capacity within the body to experience grief, sorrow, fear, anger. Get more comfortable in the uncomfortable. Pause. Deep breath. Anchor. Contributing to the greater evolution of humanity through in the lane that’s meant for us. We all play a part. I dedicate this shout out to Her. Our Greatest Mother. Our Greatest Teacher. She is in need of our service.
