We had the good fortune of connecting with Marloma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marloma, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because I’ve always needed to be making music and I think I always will need to do that. However, I didn’t always know that was something the world may also need. When I was 14, my friend of the same age passed away from a rare form of cancer. During the very early stages of grief I wrote a tribute song to her. My mom ended up recording it and the mom of my friend asked me to play it at her celebration of life. The entire day I felt like I was falling apart until I sang to her. It truly felt like I made a connection and her mom hugging me after the tribute told me what I needed to know: There is space for this in the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Phoenix-based “sad girl” pop/rock artist whose mission is to create vulnerable music that helps young women process their difficult, unique feelings. Over the past 3.5 years I have grown my online presence to over 60k followers across social media platforms and I just had my first song break 100k streams on a platform. In a way, this has been easy because I love what I do. In another, more retrospective way it can be really painful to display your own traumas in hopes that your art will find someone who could use it. Especially when you don’t know if that’s even going to happen. But honestly, I’d be making songs no matter who listened.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Phoenix, AZ has some of the BEST local businesses in the whole world (I’m biased). I would start the day at Smoothie King and head over to Changing Hands Bookstore for a stroll to look through trinkets and books. We’d definitely be hitting up Stinkweeds, Tracks in Wax, Grand Ave Records, Central Records and Zia Records for some music hunting. Since Arizona is one of the few states that allows people to have capybaras I would hit up a small ma & pa’s backyard capybara petting business. We’d certainly be catching a live show at Rebel Lounge, The Nile, Valley Bar or Crescent Ballroom – these smaller venues have the coolest acts. Finally, I’d take my guest to First & Last for the sandwich of a lifetime.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out Arizona Women’s Recovery Center for the incredible work they’ve been doing across the Valley for the past 65 years. Specifically, I’ve been working with Linda Donaldson on raising funds for AWRC at my show on 4/29 and she has been so supportive and passionate about helping the people she works with. Please look into donating if you can!
