We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Yaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Great question! I have been in the construction world my whole life. My dad was a finish carpenter/project manager and when the company he was working for went out of business, he started his own company. After I graduated from college I worked as a kitchen and bath designer for several years, but – following my dad’s example – it was a dream of mine to own my own business. When an opportunity presented itself to start my own company, I made the leap from employee to business owner. As a business owner, I can make the decisions I feel are best to drive the future of the company. It also gives me the opportunity to work more closely with my customers and to really put my skills and knowledge to work for them. Every day is filled with new opportunities to be creative. I also have a young family, and owning my own business gives me more flexibility in my day to day life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Of course right now, I am keeping busy getting my business started. I am looking for ways to get the word out about Uncharted Design and the services we offer. I study design trends and research how those trends translate into our Arizona lifestyle. I enjoy meeting and networking with others in the business. I love what I do and am always looking for new ways to help my clients. No project is too small or too complicated to work on; if there is a solution I will find it!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tucson in the greatest city in the world! We would definitely have to spend some time at the UA. There’s always a sporting event to attend, a performance to watch at Centennial Hall, exploration to be done at the Flandrau Planetarium, knowledge to be gathered at the Arizona State Museum, minerals to be admired at the Gem & Mineral Museum, frisbees to throw on the mall with a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. Then we could head over to Lindy’s on 4th for a challenge burger and later to Gentle Ben’s for a beer. Downtown and 4th Avenue are always fun destinations with something for everyone. We’d also have to be sure to head up to Arizona Zipline Adventures right after a good monsoon rain – gorgeous! Depending on the time of year, there is a lavender farm up in that area we could visit as well for a little calm and relaxation after the zip line. Maybe we’d spend some time poolside at Loew’s Ventana Canyon. The list goes on and on!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a shoutout to my parents and my wife. My parents supported and encouraged me as I was growing up and deciding my professional path after graduating from college. My wife has helped so much and has had to sacrifice a lot to allow me to pursue my dreams. And, of course, my kids. They are my rock and I will do ANYTHING for them.
