We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Murillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I have always been a huge advocate for goal setting and creating a vision board. I set 3 month goals, 6 month goals and 12 month goals. And each of them are displayed on the vision board to keep me focused on the future and the dreams I have for my business and my family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a Master Stylist for almost 15 years. I pride myself on research of proper haircare for specific hair types. So many people come see me and are at a loss for what to do with their hair or how to care for it. Each head of hair is so uniquely different, there is never the same formula of what to do or use. Education is key to having fantastic hair, and that’s what I teach each and every guest in my chair. I have a burning heart for unique color application, blondes and extensions when I’m behind the chair. I get asked what I love most about my job…not that I particularly have a “favorite”, but that’s what I do a lot. I started my hair career when I was 25, which is considerably late for a lot of hairdressers. Most start in their younger years, but I was raising two children when I decided to go back to school. It was difficult to live on one income at the time, but with the support of a very loving husband, beauty school was a success! He has been my rock for almost 20 years now and I have him to thank for pushing me and inspiring me to grow. With all things in life, we go through difficult moments, but my advice is to find someone that will always cheer you on and go along side you to help you reach your goals.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a HUGE small business person, so I like to visit local coffee shops. Being a resident of Queen Creek, I’m a big fan of the Olive Mill. They have a large variety of wine from local wineries, a huge selection of olive oils made right in house and they house Superstition Coffee, which happens to be my number 2 coffee spot. I love going to Schnepf Farm for local vendor events, the Windmill Winery in Florence has amazing wine tastings. And Joes Farm Grill has the best garlic fries I’ve ever had. If I were to take them on a journey, my family loves visiting Williams, AZ. It reminds us of a 1950’s neon lit town. We also like to go to Bearizona when we are there. Or one of my personal favorite places to visit is Bisbee, AZ. The history is rich and there is tons of places to explore!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The brands that I use at the salon were chosen with extreme care and thought when I went into business. I have had a ton of support for Amika Haircare before and especially lately during the craziness we are all experiencing. They care for the community, give back in so many ways and care for the small business owners. My distributor, MAKA Beauty, helps hairdressers like myself function from day to day. From sending our products and enrolling us in educational classes, they haven’t faltered one moment when we needed them most. Being a small business themselves, it was so heartwarming that we had such amazing support from such a caring company.
