We had the good fortune of connecting with LeOndra Mailo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LeOndra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue a career in fashion design because I have the responsibility to at least try to live my life by following my dreams, no longer allowing fear or risks to set me back but using joy and determination as my drive to live my life freely! I was 17 years old applying for colleges and deep down I knew I wanted to attend FIDM, so I applied and got accepted but I was afraid. I feared failure and the risk of pursuing a fashion design career due to the stereotype that these careers are risky and financially unstable. So instead of following my passion I went to a 4 year state university and received a “safe” accounting degree. Fast forward roughly 10 years I’m working in the financial industry but I still have the urge to pursue fashion. I was in the midst of applying for my MBA when the opportunity to apply for a fashion degree came across. I literally saw this opportunity as a second chance and a sign from God not to not allow fear to dictate my decision. So instead of applying for an MBA I applied for Fashion Design and the rest is history. It’s a struggle following an artist career, I’m not going to lie but it’s important to remember that success does not always come in wealth, success is in the eye of the beholder. However you view and live a life of success is up to you and how fulfilled you are with life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Loveur is a holistic creative brand. My brand believes in the good in everyone and wants everyone to believe in the good they have in themselves. Our philosophy is, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself, and self-love is key.” Meeting new people, creating new memories, and being surrounded by art is our lifestyle. From adopting pets from homeless shelters, attending music festivals and traveling in between, Loveur embraces living freely, working boldly and embracing lovingly
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I receive a lot of my inspiration from the city life and love going to Downtown Phoenix either for First Friday, eating at The Fig or walking around through buildings around CityScape. There’s tons of artist inspirational places to explore there
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I thank my family, especially my mom for introducing me to the sewing machine and fashion design in general. My family were my first employees, interns, models, interns and investors their love and support helps my drive. To my husband for being my support and pushing me to be better than I what I see. And God for being good, all the time.
