We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanin Monroe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanin, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in the Maryvale area. My background consisted of a very impoverished upbringing. I was raised by my grandmother in a home of sometimes 14 people in a 3 bedroom house. My mother and father were both crack addicted and abandoned myself and my sister at the age of 8. I learned that “you are a product of your environment”, before I learned that you do not have to be a product of your environment, Today, my brand stands for the right and the decision to be whomever one chooses to be; despite where they come from and their background. My brand is focused on empowerment and unity of all people as well as being comfortable with ones sexuality, individuality and expression thereof. Kindness, humor for life and the many milestones; and being your best self are at the forefront of what #Blondish means…

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am not only an artist but I am also an audio engineer. Becoming a engineer has not been easy and I have much to learn still. My desire to engineer my music was driven by poor experience stemming from being a woman and attempting to insert myself in a predominantly male culture . I have worked with various artists, producers and engineers on collaborative projects that have helped me enhance my skills and exercise my lyricism. One of the many lessons I have learned is that even when it is your passion, nothing comes easy and without the need to invest in self and dedication to constant improvement. The world should know I am doing what I love and what I am most passionate about; I feel I am in my purpose..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to recommend places to venture in Arizona ,I would first recommend Roosevelt Row for their art and culture it provides to the Phoenix landscape. For food, I would recommend Culinary Dropout for their food, beverage selection and game like atmosphere. I would also recommend Wingz and Thingz in Avondale for southern comfort food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my fans and friends who have really been family throughout my growth process. Without the encouragement and motivation I could not have maintained courage to create content and chase my dream. Shoutout to family, friends and fans!
