We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Evard-Moses and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to start a place where people could get honest, unbiased advice without being sold to. I felt like my whole industry was so sales-y and people always had to be on edge.

What should our readers know about your business?
I think I’m one of the few financial advisors that focuses on investing outside the stock market. I find so many people that are disenchanted with, or don’t understand the market, and I’m here to tell them that, “It’s okay!” You’re not bad at managing your finances if you don’t understand the market. Most of your financial life happens in other areas like real estate, insurance and how you spend or save your money.

I’m very proud of the relationships I have with my clients and how much they trust me. I’m honest and truly want what’s best for them. I got into finance to help people make the complex simple and I think, so far, I’ve done that.
I’ve also brought many investments they wouldn’t have seen at larger firms to them. I started focusing on alternative investments and real estate about 10 years ago and it has really paid off. Not only are they more interesting to learn about and easier to understand, some of them have great returns!

I can’t say the journey has been easy because I’ve questioned myself along the way, whether I’m making the right decisions, going in the right direction. Managing people’s money isn’t for the faint-hearted! They work hard for their money and I want to make sure I’m doing the right things. The times I’ve had a coach, collegue or other business owner to bounce ideas off have been the smoothest. That way I can talk things out and figure out the right direction, not only for my clients, but where I want to spend my time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Phoenix, almost everything there is to do is outside so hiking is a must! I’d take them to a few trails in Scottsdale, but also one or two that are about a half hour east of town. I’d also take them to the Phoenician or Royal Palms for some pool time and out to one of the many restaurants. There are so many! Glai Baan has some of the best Thai food, Pyro is just great food, but the resorts restaurants have great views and great food.

If they were up for it, going kayaking on the Verde River or Salt River would also be fun. I really tailor the visits to whoever is visiting – some people like pool time and others like to be active. Phoenix really does have a lot to do between the trails, lakes, sports teams and special events around town!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom definitely deserves most of this recognition, not only because I watched her be an entrepreneur as I was growing up, but when I wanted to quit, she would (almost) yell at me that I WAS NOT quitting and that I could do it. She knew how hard it was and that I could do it.

The book “The Four-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss also deserves a shoutout. When I read that book, it completely shifted how I viewed income, time and how I wanted to work. While I didn’t implement all the strategies, it led me on the path of realizing what work fit with my goals and what didn’t. I even hosted a Mastermind group around the book.
