We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Talsma Everson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, what principle do you value most?
At Eculeus Group Publishing, our biggest focus is community. With Brian and Natasha Beal at the helm, and a small but mighty team, we love helping local businesses to grow and create stronger communities. We help neighbors stay connected and in-the-know about current news and fun events, all while supporting the local businesses that make up our community.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the managing editor at Eculeus Publishing Group, also known as EG Publishing. Brian and Natasha Beal are the publishers and started off with just one paper just a couple of years ago. We now publish six hyper-local newspapers that feature the businesses and stories of the zip codes they serve. Combined, they’re mailed to 120,000 homes and businesses in those zip codes, plus they have some rack locations. The Deer Valley Times reaches the Deer Valley and Norterra areas (85027 and 85085), The North Tatum Times reaches the Desert Ridge area (85050 and 85054), The North 32nd News reaches the 32nd Street and Shea bubble (85028 and 85032), The Scottsdale North News reaches specific homes in North Scottsdale (85262, 85266 and 85255), The Scottsdale Standard reaches the “magic” zip code of 85254, and The Upper Westsider is exclusively all North Peoria news, reaching the 85383 homes. We feature local (to those zip codes) business news, info from local school districts, and city news. We also leave room for fun, feel-good community news, entertainment reviews, restaurant and dining news, health articles, things to do with the kids, travel features, and more. Essentially, if it’s happening in those zip codes, we want to know about it! Like most of our advertisers and supporters, we’re a small business, so we really appreciate community input and support.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would open one of our newspapers, turn to the Bites section, and visit one of the local restaurants that support us! I’d then take them on a tour of the amazing outdoor shopping malls in the area, the museums and attractions, and visit some of the parks and trails for hiking and biking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shout out to our advertisers, readers, and supporters! We have gone from one newspaper to six hyper local papers in just a few years. We couldn’t do this without their support.
