We had the good fortune of connecting with Myra Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myra, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Creating “La Catrina de Arizona” our first creation that launched my brand Latina Mi Inc in June 2021 was my first Catrina project as creative director. Having been an executive in the hospitality industry for over 20yrs & single mother the thought of doing something like was not something anyone ever imagined me doing. Being inspired by industry influencers is what sparked the idea for Latina Mi Inc. Building a team to represent the culture of La Catrina to honor Dia de los Muertos in the way that I envisioned was something I took very seriously. I wanted to work with a team that had never done something like this before. I was in search of individuals that had the same passion for their creative talents as I do & the confidence to pull it off regardless of experience. The beauty of La Catrina has become diverse over the past few years evolving into the most beautiful artistic creations and a form of storytelling through portraits. Adding in fashion with traditional wardrobe and different make up designs. That is the beauty of La Catrina, every creation is different. Honoring our passed loved ones is something our culture celebrates with pride & passion for Dia de los Muertos every year. I wanted to make sure to represent it in a respectful way while still adding my vision and concept. Lowrider model & internet influencer Nessa Alexia, makeup artist Dymond, photographers Elyssa Solana & Andrew Moreno and myself had never been a part of a project like this so I was nervous. We took the chance, trusted in ourselves/talents, and went for it! Since our launch in June, I have created in collaboration with the best in the industry. Making our first public appearance at Bomb Fest car show in San Diego Ca in October this year. In collaboration with published model/actress Krissyjayyg (IG tag) on the Bomb Fest project was probably the biggest highlight for me personally. I had been a fan of her from her tiktok videos. Since meeting her Ill be a fan of her forever she has the most genuine soul. Having influencers MUA~ Belleza Tarasca & Catrin El Monstro join us for Bomb Fest definitely stole the show that day. Belleza is by far the best MUA I’ve seen with her detail. It really is the definition of perfection. To then being named the official La Catrina of the Phoenix Suns at their Dia de los Muertos celebration in November. Our MUA Dymond created a hand painted Suns themed catrin mask for Christopher Buenrostro who was our catrin escort for Nessa Alexia at the event. Christopher is also a multitalented globally recognized MUA & the owner of Oh Lala by Posh Boutique in Phoenix. We were proud to announce our youngest model Monique Rodriguez to the team earlier this year. Monique was scheduled to model alongside Nessa Alexia for the Guadalupe car show in Sept. We never made it to the car show due to the rain that day, but Monique’s pictures were our top featured on the Latina Mi IG. I’m looking forward to watching Monique grow with Latina Mi as we see her talents develop over this next year. Those are just a few of the opportunities I have been presented with so far. It has been an honor to collab with such talented people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

When I originally had the idea to direct my first Catrina photoshoot in Arizona, I wanted it to be different than anything anyone had done before. I searched the internet, social media sites & hashtags etc to see if anyone in Arizona had done something like our creations and I did not find anything. I was excited that Latina Mi Inc would be the first Catrina creators of Arizona. The hardest part of our first creation for me was finding the right team to represent not only Latina Mi but the culture of La Catrina. I wanted a traditional Catrina creation for my first photoshoot. I also wanted to add my own personal additions like face/wardrobe jewels, flags that represent for our culture. The Phoenix Suns flag we used in our first creation is what got the attention of Suns representatives resulting in our first paid partnership with an NBA team. We were all in shock when we got the news! Adding in the look of the classic car to my creations is something I will be doing more of on future projects. The cars are the perfect addition to any photoshoot. Our custom headpieces, marigold flowers, mariposa butterflies & wardrobe pieces imported from Mexico will be Latina Mi traditions that I will always include in my creations. What I would like the world to know about Latina Mi Inc is that none of us are/were professionals before our first photoshoot. We saw an opportunity to do something new fun & different while trusting our own talents. We empowered ourselves to think outside the box to create something that had not been done before in Arizona. We took a chance on ourselves, and the journey has been a dream come true for me since then!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Being inspired by industry influencers is ongoing for me. There’s always a new creation or concept that grabs my attention and I’m instantly in love with a new portrait every day. I feel it’s important to always give recognition. I give many thanks to globally published photographer/mentor Gus Mejia for representing the culture of La Catrina in the most beautiful way. His talent & representation of La Catrina in his portraits is what inspired me to launch Latina Mi Inc. I had the opportunity to assist Gus Mejia on set for several photoshoots this year, he runs a tight set I was exhausted, but it was the best experience. Learning from the best such as Gus is the reason Latina Mi has received the recognition & success that we have. La Catrina Adante has been my most influential Catrina creator. She creates new concepts that are so different than anyone else. Every creation she presents is breath taking! Her talent leaves us in awe every single time. Her creations are the best in the world. She is my favorite to watch. California Catrina creators MUA~ Belleza Tarasca & Catrin El Monstro have been a great influence as well. Their creations & talent are the true beauty of La Catrina culture. Not only are they talented but all-around amazing people. Globally published fashion designer Aurora Osuna has given me the most confidence to continue my creations. I had the honor to collaborate with Aurora on our Phoenix Suns project. She designed a one-of-a-kind original gown for our Catrina model Nessa Alexia. Aurora took the time from her busy schedule to design for us and even personally flew the gown to Az on game day. Victoria Imports in the Desert Sky mall has been a huge support providing us with exclusive wardrobe pieces imported from Mexico. I must give a huge shout out to the Lowrider community. Car clubs from across the country have reached out to show us love, support and because they want their cars in our photoshoots. The Maricopa County Majestics CC has been a supporter of Latina Mi since our first creation. Larry Calles beautiful classic bomb was featured in our first photoshoot. I have to say the most support has come from within our own team at Latina Mi Inc. my favorite part about this experience for me so far is all the things you don’t see. All the behind-the-scenes moments of us are the best memories. We truly appreciate all the support from everyone. We are looking forward to adding more talent to our team in 2022. We are excited about the future of Latina Mi Inc.
