We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Holloway and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, what do you attribute your success to?
I have always firmly believed that true success stems from passion. A lot can be achieved in one’s work through staples like time management and consistency. However, I find if you are truly passionate about the work you are doing the results will be exponentially greater. This is what I attribute all of my success in life to; finding what I am good at, as well as what I am passionate about. Where those two lines meet is where I have chosen to invest my time and ultimately what brings me success, in its many forms.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been drawn to creative endeavours. Like many, when the pandemic hit I found myself out of work and with a lot more time on my hands. I applied my main principle of spending time on what I am passionate about. Without my full time job, my passion was art. I began pursuing two interests, photography and painting. Both, initially, were hobbies to pass the time. However the more exposure my work received, the more opportunities came knocking at my door.

What was once a hobby became more. I began getting brand partnerships on my social media, which was really unexpected and rewarding to see that not only others, but companies attributed value to my work.

At the same time, word of my paintings spread and suddenly during the holiday season I was completing commissioned paintings full time.

It certainly was not always easy. Especially in the early days, as both creative outlets required funding that was hard to come by without my full time job. However, I never let that stop me. It sounds cliché but truly what kept me going was belief in myself. I knew without a doubt that if I was passionate about my work I would find success. That kind of passion translates into your work and others (in time) will recognize this and that is where value comes from.

I am now working full time in my career again, as I have an education background in science. But I still continue to pursue my creative interests in my personal time. I think that is the biggest lesson I would want others to learn from my experience. It is okay in the beginning to not ‘quit your day job’ as it were. Many people will say you have to dedicate yourself fully to be successful, and perhaps down the line that will ring true. But for now, if you are just getting started and in the early days of exploring a new business or interest, allow yourself to find a happy medium of practicality and risk taking. Find your footing, utilize a full time job to fund your passion and when the time is right you will be able to choose one path whole heartedly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will approach this question as a tourist since I still have so much to explore myself across Arizona!

I am a big fan of sight seeing, I would undoubtedly start the week off in Sedona, exploring the incredible hiking trails through the day and some of the beautiful resorts at night.

After which I would go for a more urban experience like catching a Diamondback game at Chase Field followed by drinks at Greenwood Brewing on N 5th st. There are also some great shops along that stretch to explore. While in the greater Pheonix area I would undoubtedly plan a brunch out in Scottsdale – The Montauk has a fun weekend vibe, likely followed by an afternoon at the Pheonix Art Museum (which I have been desperately wanting to visit).

Finally, to close out the week I would travel to the Tucson area for a few more sight seeing ventures. Top of that list would certainly be Saguaro National Park and the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Countless people deserve credit when it comes to my success, but it all starts with my supportive mom! Not only was I raised by very supportive parents in my formative years, but even later in life where adults are often told to be ‘practical’ my mother always supported any of my riskier or more creative endeavours.
That safe space to be yourself and pursue your passions can be a key difference between taking the first step or letting self doubt stop you.
