We had the good fortune of connecting with NaTyshca Pickett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi NaTyshca, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is my authenticity. As a journalist, I have the duty to provide information to my audience to keep them educated on what’s happening in their community. When I started Arizona Coffea, it was with the idea to create a platform with this mission in mind; To change the narrative of how the Black community is viewed in the media. With each story I tell, picture, or video I share, I am doing exactly what I set out to do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a journalist, I am a storyteller. My art is taking something and creating visualization with words. I have always been a writer. Starting as young as twelve years old and having my first poetry book published. From there, I joined the school newspaper in high school and pursued a degree in journalism. While in college, I worked as a writer and editor for the paper. My journey after college was an interesting path, nevertheless, I made a full circle and I’m back on the path of my first love, writing. Writing helped me overcome challenges many have no idea I’ve endured, however, they will soon find out when I release my memoir
If there is anything that I’ve learned on this journey of walking in my purpose as a journalist, I would say, I’ve allowed many to deter me from my path. Distractions often come from those who mean the most to us. Although my destination was delayed, I was never denied the path that led me to where I am today.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a lover of art, so I would take her to the Roosevelt Art District in downtown Phoenix. First Fridays are always an experience. There are some good restaurants here in Arizona. One, in particular, is Sugar Jam located in Scottsdale, AZ. The ambiance is cool and so much fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout-out to my husband and our two sons. They are the reason I go so hard to share the stories in our community. Too often, I see images of Black men and boys being treated as if their lives do not matter, when in fact, they contribute much positivity in our communities, and it often goes unrecognized. I want them to know that they are seen and their stories will be told.
