We had the good fortune of connecting with Radine Dempsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Radine, how do you think about risk?
Every career and professional decision comes with a risk and every risk has lead to the next phase of my life. Living without fear of what might happen with each new opportunity has given me a career filled with abundance.
As ‘pivot’ is the new term used for the concept of career adjusting I’ve been full circle several times. It’s down right scary sometimes, lead by what if’s. What if I had not made the decision to move to Scottsdale? It’s turned out to be one of the best risk’s I have taken.
The beauty industry spans a wide variety of career opportunities and I’ve always been open to exploring everything it has to offer. I’m passionate about what I do and have loved every step of the way.
While I’m new to Scottsdale, I am far from new to the beauty industry. I’m in my fourth decade as a hair stylist- a fact which makes me experienced, not “old.” I have spent those 40 years based in and around the Boulder, Colorado area exploring the fields of beauty and fashion from a multitude of perspectives. A mastery of hair cutting, hair color, and makeup artistry evolved into other exciting pursuits: esthetician, cosmetology instructor, product ingredient junkie, photo styling, video production, and teaching multiple levels of industry education. Working ‘behind the chair’ has always been my stabilizer. Talking with and helping people of all demographics has enriched my life beyond anything else I have done. The stories of each and every person are woven together to make me the person I am.
I love hair. I love education, I love the beauty industry! Mostly, I just love people.
The very fortunate person I am, I’ve always had the opportunity to work with awesome people sharing mega talent. I constantly seek out professionals to collaborate and work with to continue my mission of being the best I can at what I do.
If I had fear of risk I would not have the full life that I do, I wouldn’t be doing beauty in Scottsdale, I would be sedentary which is not the life for me!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was teaching cosmetology, each student was required to pick one person to interview for a story. One of them picked me. Her questions was, “What is the one favorite thing you have done in this career?” I could only pick one thing. After pause and thought my answer was “Whatever I am doing in the moment.” I pour passion into everything I do and ultimately I love where I am and what I’m doing. Which right now happens to be, working in my North Scottsdale studio doing hair, and designing beautiful one of a kind and bespoke hair accessories for brides at Bridal by Radine.
My career spans over 4 decades and is full of personal and professional accomplishments, all of them amazing! The beauty industry has opened doors and given me more than I could ever have expected. There are so many facets and aspects to this business with the internet and social media leading to more opportunity. Everything I do is rooted in beauty!
If I had to pick one thing that has been instrumental in my continued passion for the beauty business it would be education. I am a student and an educator. At my tender young age I’m able to learn from the best teaching to all! At this stage in the game it’s all about peer collaboration and everyone seems to know everyone as people filter away.. Leads open doors- it’s all about who you know, how you show up, and delivering more than expected at an advanced skill level.
In summary, my life is about building relationships, caring, learning, and sharing my knowledge and experiences. Everywhere I go people pick my brain for answers to questions of all things. Having lived a very full life, my heart feels content with the ability to answer- that is how I define my success. By being able to share the wisdom I have obtained on my life long journey.
As I go forward I will dedicate myself to education and my continued quest to create beauty in all things..
* I added an image of my earliest days in design- when it all began. I think I was 3 years old. Making paper dolls.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This has me stumped! I’m relatively new to the area and haven’t had the opportunity to explore much but I will say,- Scottsdale and the surrounding cities have the best thrifting ever!!! EVER! I love thrifting! I am always on the search for vintage beads to re-purpose and incorporate in my Bridal by Radine accessories.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many shout outs they wouldn’t all fit in the little box!
The biggest shout out for this specific phase of my life would have to go to Jay Wesley Olson owner of Bespoke Scottsdale and Pulp Riot Hair., along with Yureesh Hooker and Carlo Novoa. Each one of them inspiring me on different levels.
Jay Wesley is the most skilled colorist I know.- his work and energy blows my little mind! Learning from him pushes me past my comfort zone as a colorist. Trends and fashion play a huge roll in how and what we learn- Jay brings it to the table and I take it to my chair translating it to fit my people! Meeting Jay opened a lot of doors for me from here to NY.
Yureesh Hooker is one of the most talented and inspirational educators in the beauty industry. Like many of us, he’s an artist- an artist with mega talent. What I love about him is his ability to challenge life situations- he puts it out there and encourages conversation in a way that makes us all better people.
And then there’s Carlo Novoa, he brings logic, focus, and confidence to the mix for me. He guides us all to be the best version of ourselves possible. Carlo gives my decisions purpose and calm with his intention to uplift and sustain. He makes me unafraid and gives me strength to take risks.
These three don’t know it but they are instrumental in my decision to begin my new life in AZ.
