We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Hoirup and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rae, how do you think about risk?
Risk is inevitable if your goal is to grow. Once you align yourself with and become comfortable with the uncomfortable, it’s easier to identify your limiting beliefs and be more willing to work through your fears and take that risk.
Risk has played a huge role in my life this past year in particular. I try to be smart about taking risks, but this year has been a roller coaster. I had done everything by the book growing up. I got straight A’s in high school, joined clubs, and played sports. I paid my way through college and worked hard to graduate in 2 years. I never fully lived for myself or felt happy in my teen and young adult life. After graduating from college in 2019, I worked a stable 9-5 job and saved all my money. In September of 2020, I felt very out of alignment and knew that it was time to do something about it. I was only 21 with few responsibilities and knew that there was no better time to pull a 180. I had found out about Velvet Lip Blush and fell in love with cosmetic tattooing. From there, I moved from Washington State to Arizona with no plan, no friends, no house, no job. I worked hard and started my own Velvet Lip Blush company in Gilbert alongside my younger brother. I am now the happiest and healthiest version of myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When we think of cosmetic tattooing, our first thought is typically botched work from the 80s. We picture brown or white lips and green eyebrows and think, “no thank you!”
Cosmetic tattooing has become much safer and with pigment and technique development, natural-looking semi-permanent enhancements have revolutionized the beauty industry.
The technique that I use is called Velvet Lip Blush because of the natural, velvety healed results that I produce using a micro-needle and a gentle technique.
People are drawn to my work because of how natural and consistent my results are. I have extensive knowledge of color theory and color match like nobody’s business, whether you’re going for a natural look or something bold and bright.
I am also very transparent and honest about my process and what each client can expect leaving their initial appointment, as well as their included second session.
The clients who I attract are so kind, generous, friendly, and possess many other positive qualities that I can’t even begin to list. I am so grateful for them and proud to give them beautiful lips. We both get so excited when they leave their appointment in love with themselves again.
As far as the process of building a business goes, it is as easy as you make it. I have dove head-first into changing my mindset from someone who used to be naturally pessimistic and self-victimizing to someone who is enthusiastic and chooses to have a blast wherever she is. I say many of my daily affirmations in a question format and one of them is, “why is it so easy for me to be successful?” Sure, I have challenging days, we all do, but when you can visualize yourself taking those days head-on and with ease, you become that much more capable of problem-solving overcoming what life throws at you.
The biggest lesson that I have learned so far in my entrepreneurship journey is that your mindset is the most important aspect of starting a Cosmetic Tattoo business. You have to be tough, have grit and perseverance, and an unwavering belief that you got this. That success and those clients are already yours, even if they don’t know it yet. You have to do the hard things sometimes, like go to networking events (this can be so scary if you’re an introvert like me) or wake up early to hit the gym. It all comes down to how resilient you are, and if you aren’t naturally resilient, are you willing to take the initiative to learn how to be?
As intentional as I am with developing my brand to be authentic, exciting, and positive, I want people to know that I am here to serve YOU and to provide you with a collaborative experience that feels inclusive, relaxing, and leaves you feeling like a refreshed version of yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being newer to Arizona myself, I’m still establishing my favorite spots! For coffee, my go-to is Smooth Brew Roosevelt in Phoenix. I love board and bottle night at Postino South Tempe and Luci’s at The Orchard for brunch. The McKinley Club is the most beautiful networking and co-working space. Everything Just Rocks is an excellent crystal shop if you’re into metaphysical goodies. Everything Just Rocks is located in Tempe and I could spend hours looking at crystals. Camelback Antiques is massive and you are pretty much guaranteed to find whatever treasures you’re looking for. I love hiking the Kiwanis Trail at South Mountain as well as Phoenix Mountains Preserve. My ideal evening would be grabbing Smoothie King and driving around Paradise Valley at sunset, imagining what it will be like when I live there!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My younger brother, Spencer deserves a ton of credit in helping me get to where I am now. He has supported me from the beginning and is responsible for connecting me with my very first clients, who I am forever grateful for. When he saw how well cosmetic tattooing was going for me, he decided to work alongside me as a scalp-micropigmentation artist. We get to work together and keep each other motivated every day. It is a dream!
