We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Braatz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is a fundamental principle of success. There’s a quote I always find myself repeating when faced with the fear of risk… “Nothing great comes from comfort zones”. If it scares you to death, that’s a sure sign to keep going. There’s nothing quite like taking a risk to show you what you’re capable of. Taking risks not only builds character, but also confidence, humility, shrewdness, courage, and a litany of other invaluable traits. They provide clarity, insight, wisdom, and knowledge that are only made accessible through application, execution, and experience. They lessen the power external forces have over your ability to think, problem solve, then act with conviction. In my own experience with business, I’ve brushed cheeks with the gravity of regret when I chose to ignore that voice in my head that urged me to take that leap of faith. I prolonged following my passion of health & fitness for 3+ years because my mind was riddled with questions like, “What happens if I fail?”, “What if I’m not good enough?” To that, I say… “What happens if I don’t try?”, “What’s at risk if I don’t take this opportunity?” Mastering your mindset, thoughts, and perception is key to becoming comfortable with risk-taking. You can’t control what happens, but you can control your efforts and response to circumstance & opportunity. Now when faced with risk, I welcome it, embrace it: yet another chance to re-frame failure as a definitive result of effort, as a chance to learn & try again. That’s where the true treasure lies, transforming risks into chances. If you never try, you’ll never know. You’ll always be left wondering what could’ve/would’ve/should’ve happened if you just took that risk. No, better yet: chance. Now THAT’S something to be afraid of…
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My mission is to provide a holistic approach to health & wellness. The fitness industry is known for emphasizing aesthetics & optimal physical health, but health & wellness is so much more than that. I’ve learned first hand the damaging effects of neglecting aspects of the human experience. The best I ever looked was the most depressed I’d ever been. I was so aesthetically driven because it was the only thing I felt I had control over: my exercise & nutrition. My entire life felt like it was in a downward spiral, so I took it out on my body. Through this challenging period in my life, I came to realize health & wellness is equal parts mental and emotional as it is physical. My coaching style embodies this principle. My business model not only consists of a methodical, structured fitness regimen centered around your goals, but lifestyle & mental health practices that not only strengthen your body, but your mind & spirit as well. My practices have been shown to break damaging patterns, behaviors, and habits that lead to a sustainable, lifelong change, all while reaching your physical goals. It’s in our everyday decision-making and thought process that dictates our overall health, and I’m in this industry as an expert to help you master all aspects of your human system: mind, body, and spirit. Has my journey been easy? In no way shape or form. But has it been worth it? ABSOLUTELY. Believe in yourself, trust the process, and know you have a purpose and mission on this earth. Remember it whenever the going gets rough. It will sustain & maintain your fire.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m an Arizona girl at heart, so on our itinerary a hike of one of our beautiful trails would be a MUST: preferably Pinnacle Peak or Flatiron Trail if they’re really feeling adventurous. I absolutely love the foodie scene in Downtown Phoenix along with the street art, so we would spend a whole evening wondering the downtown city streets! I’m a HUGE comedy fan, so I would definitely see what comedians are in town because there’s nothing like some good laughs and craft cocktails to enhance someone’s visit in town! Sedona is just a short day trip away, so since they’d be here for an entire week, spend time up north hiking more and exploring all the small town gems Sedona has to offer. This city has so many fun and exciting options to choose from, so it’s safe to say any one of my best friends that come to town are sure to be entertained!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to personally thank and recognize Lanna Dang for believing in me, my business, and my mission: for exemplifying true leadership, courage, love, and support. I’d also like to recognize Ashley Blok at TruHit Fitness for providing me a roadmap and the courage necessary to not only be comfortable with discomfort, but to THRIVE in it!
