We had the good fortune of connecting with Reina Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Reina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has played a major role in my life. I was working tediously in the restaurant industry with no direction and after being fired I decided I wanted to tell an audience my story. I asked my friend who was a comedian to give me some stage time and it was the best decision I’ve ever made! The show was sold out and I was so scared! I took several shots of tequila and was shaking so hard I could barely hide it. To my suprise people laughed! I guess getting fired and telling everyone at work how you REALLY feel on the way out is great material. I fell in love with comedy in that moment. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done but most rewarding. Going up in front of large audiences and bombing but than having the courage to try again has given me unparalleled confidence. It made me love myself the way I am flaws and all. I was starting to think something was wrong with me but not everyone is built to work a 9 to 5. I’m passionate about comedy because it’s the only job that hasn’t fired me and I will continue to work at it meticulously! I’m so glad I took the risk of looking stupid in front of an audience three years ago because I accidentally stumbled upon my passion.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m brutally honest with my comedy. I’m a hot mess in a dress and I’m usually in shambles but at least I’m over here looking like a snack!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to take someone out I would take them to Beevy for brunch! They have bottomless mimosas and a dj. Shopping would take place at west gate outlets! For lunch I would take them to El Super Taco because thier Birria tacos are the best! At night we could go to the loyalty lounge in old town for awesome drinks that place is awesome.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom! She’s my biggest supporter. She used to have to hold my hand before my shows!
