We had the good fortune of connecting with Renelle E Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renelle E, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
One book that has truly impacted me is “Conscious Language” by Robert Tennyson Stevens. As a Black woman, I’ve seen firsthand how society often tries to write our stories for us. This book reminded me that words carry power—they shape how we perceive ourselves and how we navigate the world. It taught me to be intentional with the language I use, especially when speaking to myself. The shift was powerful—I began to see how changing my words could change my narrative.

As a therapist, I carry this lesson into the work I do every day. I teach my clients that the words they use to describe themselves and their lives shape how they feel and how they heal. When they shift their language, they begin to shift their story, and that opens the door to growth, intimacy, and connection. This awareness continues to guide me in my own life and in my work with clients, helping us move from survival to growth.”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Kaleidoscope Services, where I focus on intimacy, sex therapy, and infidelity recovery. The kaleidoscope gives you a different view, and that is what I want to give my clients. Sometimes a shift in perspective is all it takes to begin healing, reconnecting, and seeing love in a new light.

As a Black woman and therapist who has personally experienced betrayal and disconnection from my sense of self, I bring both expertise and lived experience. Building a practice while breaking stigma around sex and betrayal was not easy, but every challenge taught me to stay consistent and trust my vision. I am most proud of creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and not judged. My story and my brand both say the same thing. Healing is possible, and pleasure is not a luxury; it is essential.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit, I’d want them to experience the best of Scottsdale and the East Valley—a mix of good food, shopping, culture, and those desert views you can’t get anywhere else. Here’s how I’d plan the perfect week.

Day 1: Brunch + Old Town Scottsdale
We’d kick things off with brunch at Hash Kitchen, where the DJ keeps the vibe lively and the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar is unmatched. Afterward, we’d stroll through Old Town Scottsdale, browsing art galleries and boutiques before heading to Scottsdale Fashion Square for some luxury shopping. We’d wrap up the night with dinner and cocktails in Old Town.

Day 2: East Valley Adventure
We’d start with brunch in Gilbert or Mesa, then head to the OdySea Aquarium for an afternoon surrounded by sea life. Later, we’d shop and hang out at Desert Ridge Marketplace before catching sunset views from Camelback Mountain or the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Dinner would be somewhere with patio views of the desert glow.

Day 3: Arts + Culture
Breakfast at Eggstasy would fuel us for a visit to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. From there, we’d wander the city’s public art walk, discovering murals and sculptures along the way. Dinner would be paired with live music to close out the day.

Day 4: Shop ‘Til We Drop
This day would be all about retail therapy. We’d start with brunch at Prep & Pastry before exploring Scottsdale Fashion Square, Scottsdale Quarter, and Kierland Commons. Each spot has its own mix of shops, restaurants, and people-watching. Dinner would be somewhere chic in North Scottsdale.

Day 5: Desert Escape
We’d take a morning hike in the McDowell Mountains, then recharge with lunch and a spa afternoon. The evening would be low-key with a cozy dinner and maybe some stargazing under the Arizona sky.

Day 6: Food + Music
We’d return to Hash Kitchen or another lively brunch spot for great food and weekend vibes. The afternoon would be for exploring farmers’ markets, local shops, or murals. Dinner would be at a chef-driven restaurant, followed by live music to end the night on a soulful note.

Day 7: Relax + Reflect
Our final day would be slower—one more brunch, a little souvenir shopping, and some poolside lounging. To close out the trip, we’d enjoy one last desert sunset and dinner before saying goodbye.

For me, the kaleidoscope is the perfect metaphor. Just like a twist of glass gives you a new view, this itinerary shows off the different ways you can see Scottsdale and the East Valley—colorful, vibrant, and always shifting.
