We had the good fortune of connecting with Sammie Leigh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sammie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I am currently working on pursuing a career in music. I’d have to say this is because music has always been something I have always held close.
It’s what has gotten me through some of the hardest days.
Personally, I struggle with a lot of anxiety. Growing up, it went undiagnosed so I honestly had no idea why I felt the way that I did. But, no matter how down I got, music was always something that would help pull me through it.
When I began creating my own music, I fell even more in love with the craft and all that it is. I found that there is so much more to music than I imagined.
So I set forth on my journey, to try to create music that could be THAT for somebody. A safe space, of sorts.
To keep gaining knowledge, growing in my craft and creating new stuff.
In the hopes of, eventually, getting to a place where I can help others to grow and prosper within themselves. Believe in themselves. I believe that music can be a very beautiful and powerful tool.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The journey has been long and bumpy, and still has a long way to go. Some time ago, I started to try to pursue making music. I set up a few appointments for studio time, where they skipped out on me with little to no notice. After that, I became a bit more hesitant to follow that path. After years of dealing with bullies, bump after bump and then this? What was I doing wrong? Was I “not good enough?” For a little while, my social life went out the window, only to be seen for Thursday night Karaoke.
Flash forward a few years, I started to believe in myself again. It took a lot of work and time, but it was well worth it.
I was eventually diagnosed with anxiety, which honestly explained a lot. Some people may think it’s silly, but for me.. it has been very real. I’d be lying if I said I don’t struggle with it still, but it has gotten easier to cope with.
After years of discouragement; one day I posted a video of an original song of mine. A friend of mine ended up introducing me to the first person to really give me the opportunity to record my own stuff. I started to release music and perform live. I even got to make a music video!
How exciting, right?! It’s been over 3 years now, and I still find myself wanting to pinch myself.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way…

My goal is to create music that helps others to believe in themselves, or to get through whatever it is they’re personally dealing with in life. A safe space of sorts.
I would like to spread awareness on mental health and reach a place in my career where I can help others who struggle with it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely breakfast at The Port in downtown Sandusky, their food is delicious. We would have to go check out the scenery at Hocking Hills and Mohican, both beautiful spots in ohio.
Probably camp 1 night at both. Bringing smores for the fire, and other food to make.
Maybe catch a show in Cleveland or surrounding area, and go a bit early to check out the art museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s so hard to choose! First of all, my family. Who have always supported my love of singing and music, in general. They’ve always believed in me and I am so grateful to them.
My boyfriend, Ryan, who has been so supportive and motivating. He helped me believe in myself enough to try to pursue a career in music.
My friend, Alva, who introduced me to my producer, Jack. They were the first people to really take me under their wing and get me started. Jack has helped so much with the creation aspect of my music and videos I’ve released.
& of course, all my friends and supporters along the way.
I couldn’t do it without them, and I am so truly grateful to each and every one.
