Meet Srika Donthu

We had the good fortune of connecting with Srika Donthu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Srika, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because music has always been the most authentic way for me to express myself. It allows me to channel emotions, tell stories, and connect with people in a unique way. I’ve always been inspired by artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo, and seeing how they could touch lives through their art motivated me to do the same. For me, being an artist is not just about creating; it’s about sharing experiences and connecting with others who might feel the same way. Music lets me explore my potential and constantly grow, which is a journey I’m excited to be on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started with Hannah Montana honestly. When I was in elementary school, I loved her! I remember singing the theme song everywhere! Then I started playing guitar and was choir for majority of middle school and high school and started vocal lessons locally. I remember in 2017, I saw Sabrina Carpenter when she was on our DeTour tour in Charlotte, and after seeing her perform, I knew that music was something I wanted pursue. So then I started writing songs, but during quarantine in 2020, I decided to actually start releasing songs and putting my music out in the world. Getting where I am today definitely wasn’t easy. Growing up, the culture I am apart of never pushed the arts and instead encouraged pursuing a career in STEM. So basically all the kids I grew up with – and most of the people I know today – are focused on pursuing a career in medicine or technology or law, etc. There was a point in time and sometimes I still feel like it’s easier just do what everyone else is doing and go down the “easier” path. However, I learned that it wouldn’t be any easier since I am not actually passionate about what everyone else is pursuing. It’s always been music for me.
Despite all of my doubt and uncertainty, I am proud of myself for continuing to go after my passion. I released my debut album, Talking to the Moon, in April. I poured so much of myself into this project and seeing it come to life is something I’m so proud of. It’s a reflection of my journey, and I hope it resonates with others who might feel the same way as me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here’s some sights/restaurants I recommend to anyone visiting Charlotte: Mint Musuem

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a lot of people that have played a role in my career, showing support or helping me directly with my art. I wanna give a big shoutout to my family and friends for their unwavering support with my music and always encouraging to chase my passion. I also wanna give a shoutout to my producer, AJ Kemp, without him I wouldn’t have my debut album. His guidance and expertise brought my vision to life sonically.
