We had the good fortune of connecting with Stells di Rossi Hurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stells, how does your business help the community?
In 2021, Billboard magazine released findings of a 10 year study and survey conducting analysis of the entire music industry. They found that only that 14% of songwriters were women. The gender equality gap in production, song writing and entertainment does stop there. even fewer of that 14% are disabled, minorities or plus sized. This not only makes what I do important but also rare. Sadly the public being used to only supporting what they have normalized – this makes me marginalized and unicorn as a plus sized, women of color that produces, records and performs. Not just in the rock genre which is even more rare but statistically in the entire industry globally. So what I do hopefully inspired, educates and changes things for future generation to be empowered be seeing that I am making that change. I am here to level the playing field, not as a cover artists but as an original authentic content and art creator. I never had someone to look up to in my likeness and every time I perform. model or make press – I inspire others of all walks of life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are only six black female rockers alive on planet earth that have made a successful career in the entire rock music industry according That Sister Magazine’s October 2022 article – These 6 African American Rock Stars Will Rock Your World. They are metal singer Alexis Brown of Straight Line Stich , Big Joanie – the all women of color punk group, Tamar Kali – metal artist, Militia Vox- a metal artist, Britney Howard- blues/rick artist, Shingai Shoniwa (from the UK band the Noisettes) – and you’re probably wondering whyyouve never heard of most of these women. Almost noon of them are played on average radio stations and are pretty much unknown by most people. That is SAD.

Being a plus sized woman of color in the rock music genre is not an easy thing. Per Zippier statistics in the current music industry demographics 19.6% of all musicians are women and 80.4% are men. The ethnicity findings are 65% Caucasian, 12% Latino, 10% African American and 5.4% Asian. We have a problem with inequality one the music industry for women of color. We are rare, and even more rare is cross artistry.

Being a cross over artists is a term that dated back to segregational era of united sites history roughly just about 70 years ago. People were practicing apartheid mentality and practices within everyday American society due to serration. Radio station, people and public were literally racially divided. Sadly this practise despite being long gone is still silently upheld subcontiously where pigment association has created stereotypical bias in the arts.

What I do is break that glass ceiling. My art is a form of activism and humanitarianism hence the name Method to the Madness. I strive and work to continue what my grandfather stared working as a guitarist for the Cleftones in the 50’s- ending racial engender inequality in the arts. Its time for the sundown music mentality to realize it’s 2023. Despite the change socially we have not updated that in reality. Being overlooked, lacking opportunity, lacking performers that break through and do anything beyond the scope is misunderstood publicly.

A lot of people ask if Im a jazz, soul or r&b singer – Im a rocker. A punk, alternative grunge and it saddened me at first. But when performing Black Renaissance and events like Juneteenth, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing young women, older women, and especially little girls rush tot eh stage to greet the unicorn that is the black female rocker. I didn’t have that opportunity or anyone to look up to other than Tina Turner. I want to empower others to strive to be more than a stereotype as an artist and just be and be able to be accepted publicly rather than cast aside due to generationally engrained racism and chauvinism we have all become acclimated to acceptation as something normalized.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I know it may seem silly, but the hot air balloon experience in Phoenix is epic. Something about seeking the gorgeous Arizona skies up in the air is magical. If you get the opportunity to try he Phoenix Hot Air Ballon Flight do it.

Oro Brewing Co in Mesa is a nice spot, and they have a really amazing peach ale. The band was excited to perform and the owner is really nice.

I have always been a fan of Native American culture and Heard Museum. Something about being there and seeing so much culture and history for the people was moving, emotional. I think being in Arizona one must appreciate and pay homage to the roots of the rich native and latino culture. It is a huge part of the history here and it’s fascinating and beautiful to see that heritage acknowledged.

Being a musicIn I have to say that the Musical Instrument Museum is at the top of my list. Geeking out on the gear in that musical was one of the funnest things for someone into music. It is a must even if you are not a musician because

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could not do what I do without the support of my band and family first and foremost. Secondly there are so many people from my International and local communities that have been there along the way and the since the beginning. Without the love, patience and support of these people (You know who you are and I love you.), I wouldn’t be where I am today.

A few organization, I would not be able to get what I do done without my team. THOR Media productions, they handle everything from my management, recording, public appearances and in-house production. Simply Hermosa (Bernadette Alvarado), has been another supporter for not just my aspirations but also my self esteem in modeling. JDDU Photo and Video (Jesus China & Danielle Colbert). Tribal Thursday – this community welcomed me with open arms as a female performer and continues to open doors to meeting so many people both professionally and personally. Lion Brimstone, thank you for giving me my very first gig with Method to the Madness in Arizona after a ten year hiatus. You brought me back.
