We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Ruiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Little House Trading Co because I felt there was a need for more fashionable children’s clothing, I noticed as I was shopping for my daughters that the clothing was all the same no matter which store I went to. I sat down and did hours of research on materials, branding and CPSC compliance and got to work! I wanted other parents to have more variety when dressing their children while still maintaining affordability.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from most is that I try to use mostly natural fibers, you will find the majority of my shop is bamboo and cotton. These fibers are much more breathable and comfortable than synthetics especially in the Arizona heat. This required a lot of research and planning as printers for these fabrics can be difficult to find at the right price point.
I started my shop off slowly, I reached out to other companies and did small collaborations with them to get myself out there. I also gave away a lot of free products in exchange for reviews. This was not something that grew overnight, I had a lot of help from friends who would share my posts and refer their friends to me.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that your customers make your business! There is nothing quite like the feeling I get when a customer tags me in a photo of their child wearing something I made.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Ritz Carlton, Dove Mountain for Sunset Celebration. A flautist stands on the mountain and plays while you enjoy your favorite cocktail and a beautiful view! (Try the buffalo tacos)
The Sonoran Desert Museum, a treasure chest of things unique to this area.
The Blacktop Grill in Tucson for the absolute best tacos, Keto Chicken Tacos are my personal favorite.
Tombstone for the gunfights, lunch and all the history, the courthouse is a wealth of historical artifacts and information.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children for being my inspiration and my guinea pigs, and my husband and family for supporting my vision.
