We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Lacey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was widowed unexpectedly in 2019, and found love again in Arizona after i moved here from Vermont to be with family. My new husband and i honeymooned in the White Mountains and never left! I have always had a passion for baking, and after baking too many yummies for us, I needed to share. At the time I didn’t know about the cottage license in Arizona so I looked for a way to satisfy my creativity and treat fur babies to homemade cookies. I was speaking with a friend of mine about how life was going , she happened to be our new groomer, and all of a sudden i realized that i never saw dog treats that were made with wholesome ingredients up here! So that’s how Nosh Nibblz was born. I did a lot of reading, books and blogs, on how to choose a name, and I wrote a business plan in one afternoon. I found a name I loved and launched my LLC. I think it was never a thought of not succeeding, but I knew enough about business that it had to be something i loved.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been cooking delicious meals for over thirty years, all self-taught. A few years ago i wanted to challenge myself to learn how to bake. One of my last Christmas presents from my now departed husband was a shopping spree to gather everything i needed to bake wonderful cakes and pies. After he had passed, I revived the passion for baking with my new husband, who was already crazy about my food. I had also used my passion for creative writing developing and writing a recipe column for a paper in Vermont, for nine years.
I think what sets me apart from others in the dog treat world is my sense of “knowing” that something is going to taste good for my fur babies, and for yours. I am most excited about rolling out CBD products for dogs, knowing how much it can benefit them.

Lessons – I’ve learned to not be so hard on myself, not expect perfection the first time, and to not take it too personally if a dog doesn’t like the treats.

My brand, love is the first ingredient, always. People food for pets, safe, healthy, and delicious and most of all FUN. Nothing in it that you can’t pronounce. I came up with the name because my Sheltie Teek as a puppy wouldn’t eat his kibble unless it was out of my hand. I called them nibbles, and then offered him some nosh nibbles. I remembered it when I named the business, and it fit.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If family came to visit, I’d pack a picnic lunch and take them and their dogs in our Jeep for an off-road adventure. Maybe Hawley Lake, or to my favorite place in Arizona, Jerome, full of mystery and ghosts and great shops and food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this to my parents, Barb and Jerry Givler, and my husband, Terry Lacey, who never stopped believing in me.
