We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Chilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzanne, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After the birth of my daughter, I was looking to find myself again and a career that was more in line with my values, passions and gave me more time freedom to spend with our new little one. I had been working in theatre and film for years but didn’t have the spark for the industry politics anymore. My husband was also newly cancer free and through that experience came a major shift in life priorities. As I cared for him, I had a realization of a deeper purpose to help people heal with more natural and holistic approaches, after seeing some of the chronic side effects he experienced from conventional medical treatments.

I honed in on bodywork and once I found Reflexology, it ticked all the boxes. I could use my hands as a meditation and connection, I could dive deeper into the amazingness of the human body and it’s capability to heal, I could merge anatomy with energy and other alternative therapies and I could keep learning to give continued support to my clients.

With a busy toddler, my own mobile practice offering in-home relaxation and rejuvenation to other mothers was the perfect way to give those women a moment for themselves and maintain my own balance and sanity!

Over time, I realized people all of the world could benefit from reflexology and expanded into offering tutorials and courses online.

What should our readers know about your business?
Foot Guru is in it’s 5th year of business and in some ways I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot and in other ways, I’m just getting started! I’ve learned to embrace this journey because as a creative person, I never stop having ideas and the drive to achieve them. Being an entrepreneur, I’ve learned to be a lot less sensitive and that success is just continuous trial and error without getting too upset about anything lol!

I pride myself on building a practice where I take the time to listen to my clients, get to know them on a personal level and create a genuine connection. Bodywork is attuned to this as health and healing is very personal and I find my clients like to open up to me. Through this, I have been able to do better work and support clients on a deeper level.

I’ve also focused a ton of time on educating people about Reflexology in general and it’s benefits. I personally didn’t know much about it before I started in to this journey and I think the practice as a whole has benefited from so many new people being aware of it.

As I’ve gone along, I’ve learned how important it is for me to establish boundaries to uphold my personal health as well. I limit the amount of clients I see in a day/week so that I am fresh for everyone. This is so important, especially in bodywork!

As I’ve moved into offering online learning and education, I’ve tried to prioritize creation over consumption, especially on social media. This keeps me excited, confident, my intuition flowing, helps me avoid the comparison game and ultimately serve my clients better with more resources they need. Social media can suck the life out of you so I try to use it for the good that it offers and leave the rest.

Through Foot Guru, my mission is to guide people all over the world to health and healing, one reflex at a time!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am lucky enough to live in beautiful North Vancouver, BC, Canada which means we are literally situated on a mountain, surrounded by gorgeous rivers, lakes, forest and ocean! A hike is always a great idea and brings amazing views, the freshest forest air and a chance to be immersed in nature.

For lunch, we’ll stop in my vibrant and walkable community of Lower Lonsdale for some Bella Sushi and Earnest Ice Cream for dessert and then hang at Lonsdale Quay & the Shipyards District for some shopping and live music.

Later, we’ll head to Ambleside Beach in West Van to soak up the sun and put our feet in the sand (of course!) to get all those earthing benefits. A little casual dinner seaside at The Boatshed and taking in the sunset would be the end to a perfect day exploring!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The success of my business is most definitely built on the support of the fellow women, mothers and mompreneurs in my local community. Their word of mouth referrals for my treatments, both in person and on social media, has helped to grow my practice of like minded clients. It has given us the chance to connect, vent and support each other in our daily lives and businesses which has been comforting, uplifting and inspiring! These women also exist online and as I’ve begun to offer more guided tutorials and courses, they have been so loving, supportive and grateful for the chance to learn to maximize their own health and become their own healers.
