We had the good fortune of connecting with Theresa Martis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Theresa, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
WAVE-BANDS
“Wave-bands” is the brand that offers color-coded jewelry we can wear to show our emotions to others.
The idea for developing Wave-bands was born in 2019 when I reflected on my life trying to find a solution to the nagging questions of “how are you”, “what’s wrong” and unspoken emotions that I wasn’t sure how to share with the people around me, the people I loved, those I seeked closeness with.
How fun would it be if I could wear a ring that represented a certain emotion?! When I wear it the people around me could see how I feel, wouldn’t need to ask and could interact with me appropriately without having to break the ice with the much-too-well-known interrogation.
The idea was born and developed over the next few months. Wave-bands are now on the market in the form of silicone rings, bracelets and hair ties and can be purchased via www.wave-bands.com as well as Etsy. As Wave-bands’ founder I am proud to have helped many of my customers with communicating their emotions whether they struggle with autism, depression, communication with kids or in their relationships.
PHX DOUGH BOX
As I was developing Wave-bands and bringing them to market my passion for baking was as present as always. With a graduate degree in international business and as an entrepreneur at heart I gave another venture a go! I have loved baking and eating cookie dough since I was a child so whipping up delicious recipes of cookie dough and selling them in beautiful jars was a passion turned business for me!
Little by little Phx Dough Box came to life! As a vegan for 6 years I know how difficult it can be to find delicious vegan treats. Therefore, I make it a priority to offer most of them vegan and/or gluten free! You can find my treats at markets and festivals around the valley as well as online at www.phxdoughbox.com!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share
a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After gaining my graduate degree in International Business I jumped right into a corporate career at a large international organization. While gaining valuable experience I could never really shake the thought of running my own small business and being my own boss. I started my businesses on the side and continued the corporate path for a few years until I decided to leave to take care of my newborn son.
While being at home with my son I started to focus more on my businesses Wave-bands and Phx Dough Box and developed them further little by little. Taking care of my son while supporting myself financially was tough and I took some delivery jobs on the side to make ends meet while my businesses were starting out, never losing faith. Seeing my businesses grow gave me hope and confidence each day. I am grateful how far I have come and look forward to what my path as an entrepreneur will bring in the future!
