We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Orscheln and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
HomeLyfe was conceived through necessity. My wife and I had just purchased a new home with an over-15-year-old asphalt shingle roof. After one of our beautiful Arizona monsoons, I discovered that my roof system was starting to fail, and it led me on a journey to find a solution other than an expensive roof replacement. That is when I found Gonano, a proprietary and patented nanotechnology that will extend the life of an asphalt shingle roof up to 10 to 15 years at a fraction of the cost of a new roof. My own necessity turned into an opportunity to help others maintain and protect their homes, starting with their roof.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
HomeLyfe is the most recent business in our portfolio. HomeLyfe started because I was looking for a solution for my aging roof when I came across a product out of Canada called Gonano. The product was new but worked so incredibly well that I decided to be a distributor for them here in the U.S. When I find a product or service that solves a need I want to share it with others.
Starting a business is one of the hardest things a person can do, but in the end, nothing worthwhile comes easy, and yes, it’s hard, and even harder if you don’t have a passion for what you’re trying to accomplish. In the end, you either learn from failure or you’re doomed to repeat it and treat people so well they don’t want to buy from anyone else, period. Starting a business is also hard on your family so you better ensure you have support at home, or your trip won’t last long. Lastly, your core team, executive management, or whatever you want to call yourselves, treat them like gold, they’ll be in the trenches fighting with you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In 1986 my dad brought me out from Missouri to go to ASU. It took me 24 hours to realize that shoveling snow was stupid and that’s when I knew the Valley of the sun was going to be my home. There is so much to do here, especially when you’ve lived here for the last 38 years.
Let me tell you what will be involved: lots of golf, good food, good wine, sunshine by the pool, a spa day for the ladies, a great concert or two and a fantastic tomahawk steak dinner at the house! My wife and I are from Kansas City, so we don’t order steak when we go out because we cook it better at home!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I love my Wife Darlesa. Without her support, none of this would be worthwhile.
Second, there are many people I owe much to, but I have to honor my mother and father. My mother was a coal miners’ daughter from Prairie Hill, MO., tough as she was sweet, and she gave me “Faith”. My father was raised in an equally small town with no shoes, and he taught me the incredible value of “Failure”. My father always told me he failed a hundred times to get nine companies that exceeded a billion dollars in sales. Yes, Faith & Failure drives this bus every day.
