We had the good fortune of connecting with Will Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Playing sports as a kid and working my way into high level sports (minor-pro hockey and American Ninja Warrior) showed me the determination and resilience needed to be successful…not just in sports, but in any endeavor.
You would often hear stats like “only 1 percent of people that play this sport will move on to the next level”. I always took that as encouragement instead of discouragement. All I needed to do was beat out those other people and I could be successful haha.
Fast forward a decade or two…now I realize it’s not quite as cut and dry as I believed as a kid. Hard work doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. But I can certainly say that “lack of hard work” guarantees failure!
Now as a high level trainer and fitness coach, I have the joy and privilege of teaching people these same principles that transformed my life. I help people remove pain and become “life-long athletes”…and I love every second of it.
I have been a very successful trainer for about 18 years now. But, honestly, it was a completely different challenge to learn how to treat my business like an actual business. I like to say that I am learning a new language.
So, whenever I feel overwhelmed or under-qualified, I lean on the lessons I learned growing up. I learned so many great principles playing sports and also from my wonderful parents.
I often revert back to a saying that my Dad repeated to my brother and I growing up:
“You can’t build half a fence”.
IE, finish what you start!
We lived in the country during my early youth. So lots of our sayings surrounded animals and farming haha.
You can’t build half a fence. Keep going. One step at a time.
What should our readers know about your business?
I wouldn’t particularly call myself a “natural” at anything really. I have pretty average genetics and athleticism. I suppose if I have one natural talent it would be simply that I enjoy hard work. Effort comes relatively naturally to me. And I enjoy learning.
I am a life-long learner!
With that in mind, I have had the privilege of learning from some of the cutting edge authorities on training, health, and performance in the world! I ask lots of questions…even some stupid questions. Because I really want to understand not just go through the motions. Consequently, I have taken nuggets from every one of these learning experiences. Then I add my own revelations. And this is how my current coaching methods have taken shape.
While I have been getting amazing, borderline miraculous results for my clients for many years…if I am being honest, growing an actual business has not come nearly as naturally to me! It feels at times like I am learning a new language. Growth was slow for quite some time. However, somewhere along the line, I realized I could treat this like any other learning experience (learning a new sport, etc) and I could “practice” these skills. Once I started actually practicing, my business started to grow. I am very thankful for that.
I get to help even more people now! I genuinely enjoy every second of it.
I am stoked to see what the future holds!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have great Scottsdale insights. Let’s do this!
1. Camelback mountain.
Best 360 degree views of the city. Is there a better place to be in January? No way!
2. Post hike breakfast.
Breakfast Club in South Scottsdale
3. Romantic date night.
The Edge Bar at Sanctuary Resort on Camelback
4. Catch an ASU hockey game (where I went to school and played hockey) or a Cardinals football game.
Sadly the Coyotes are no longer in AZ!
5. Go tubing on the Salt River. You might even see some wild horses!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I often get asked, “Will, why do you push so hard? You’re not get paid to play a sport anymore. Just relax.”
But I am just not done yet. I’m not done exploring my potential.
And more importantly, I truly believe I can honor God with my life.
I can honor Him in my business, my family, my friendships, even workouts. Everything!
