We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Pollard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zach, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my children. They have to most honest form of creativity. Movies, music and generally anything pop culture have a lot of influence on my artwork.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I took various art classes in high school and college but always felt my art work was misunderstood. I did a lot of DIY punk rock style art and it doesn’t necessarily fit in with the mainstream art crowd. I also have a background in graffiti as well as graphic design. I have a love for vintage 80s and 90s toys. (Everyone knows kids of the 80s had the best toys). I ended up combining my art with my love of vintage toys and creating something completely new. I make unofficial bootleg toys. I guess another way to say this is I make toys of characters or objects from movies, music and anything pop culture that you would never think you would see. Yes they are completely unlicensed, risky but I consider them tributes (if a lawyer asks). Did you ever think you would see a Wu-Tang Clan Gza action figure or a Tiger King action figure? It may sound like a strange concept but art collectors have found these pieces highly collectible. I’ve have been featured in galleries in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would check out Roosevelt Row in Phoenix and maybe Mill Ave. there are a lot of cool micro breweries in the Phoenix area. Downtown Mesa has some cool galleries and music venues to check out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to Artistic Lifestyle. My art partner Kose One. My Wife and two daughters. My fellow toy makers. Dollar Slice Bootlegs, Wicked Joyful, and Clutter Magazine
