Rolling the dice: conversations on risk

Taking Risk is essential, but how much, when and why? Taking risks effectively is as much of an art as it is a science and we’ve asked some of the brightest folks in the community to tell us about how they think about risk taking.

Risk is a crucial part of both personal and professional growth. When faced with a potential risk, I first clearly define what it entails and evaluate both the positive and negative consequences. I consider the probability of different outcomes and assess my level of preparedness to handle them. For me, having a growth mindset is essential—I view risks as opportunities for learning, and stepping out of my comfort zone as necessary for progress. When it comes to life, I think we all realize that we are all in. All of us so taking risks is an intrinsic part of being alive. So really when it comes to business, the risks that we take aren’t that much different than any other life risks. We have to make choices every day and time will pass, regardless might as well take some of these risks and look back on your life and think, “wow, I’m really glad I did that!” Read more>>

Risk-taking is everything to me, I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t taken risks. The biggest risk I’ve taken is switching my major halfway through college. I started at ASU as a Journalism student and in the middle of my sophomore year, I realized this wasn’t what I wanted to do professionally. I had been making beats on the side and saw myself getting better, I also began purchasing equipment such as speakers, interfaces, VSTs, etc., and wanted to learn more.
