We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I acquired from my career is to focus on staying humble and continuously learning. We never truly stop learning, especially within the cyber security/Information Security sector, as these fields are continuously evolving or changing, and we have to remain humble in order to grow. Along with staying humble, an open mind has been extremely helpful in my growth. An open mind paired with humility has always been extremely useful to me and has opened numerous pathways for me in my career. An example of this was during my time serving in the US Navy, I was removed from my ship due to medical issues faced from an accident I had suffered while on there. My assumption, at the time, was that my career was over, which was not the case. This led to me gaining numerous experiences within the cyber security field, gaining numerous certifications, and above all gaining my master’s degree and starting my doctoral program. Additionally, through this adverse time, I developed new skills from rehabilitation therapy which led me to create a Non-profit recently teaching Veterans in San Diego how to dance Salsa and bachata.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, it is best to say I work in most cyber and information technology spaces. My daily tasks range from updating/ creating or maintaining software/web applications, analyzing network traffic, network, and systems engineering to process improvement and efficiency, and writing cyber security compliance policies. There are very few days that are the same which makes my career path extremely interesting. There are also many days spent researching current trends in network attacks and updating our applications or systems to avoid following the paths of others who suffered these attacks.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To start, I would take them to my favorite restaurant in San Diego Rocksteady Jamaican Restaurant for brunch or lunch. Then we would spend some time by Oceanside Pier or La Jolla Shores, both are amazing locations and views and wind down with some dancing at either Bastards Canteen in Temecula or Tango Del Rey in Pacific Beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This may sound a tad cliché, but my parents have been a huge contribution to my success and where I am today. My father worked in the telecommunications field and introduced me to the bits and pieces of hardware and software maintenance and installations at a young age. My mother has always been extremely encouraging regardless of how I was doing in school during my upbringing. I started writing code at age 11 as most Computer Science students did in my country at the time. The combination of encouragement and direction from both my parents was just enough to lead me into the information technology field. Upon arriving in the United States, the encouragement and direction did not change and continue to date.
