Meet Misty Chapman | Eyebrow Architect & Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Misty Chapman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Misty, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always knew I wanted to make people feel something. Whether it was through singing or transforming them with makeup. It was while pursuing those two crafts, I was given the opportunity to become an eyebrow artist.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Tailored Brow is an intimate and thoughtfully curated brow studio that offers extensive brow services, makeup lessons, and personal on-site makeup shopping. From the moment of booking an appointment, every client can expect VIP service. The client experience is always front seat right next to the unparalleled brow craft expertise.
From the time I was ten years old looking at my older sister’s Bazaar magazines and being mesmerized by the visual stories that the artists created in far off destinations, I knew where I had to focus my future. One of my fondest memories is when I first asked my mom to buy me makeup. She thought I wanted it for myself. I responded, “No! I want to put it on other people!” She wasn’t convinced and ended up buying very non-pigmented makeup. She was the first person that I ever put makeup on, and she understood my determination from that point forward. As a teenager, my trans and drag queen friends played a huge role in helping me define my style and technique. They introduced me to the work of the acclaimed and innovative makeup artist, Kevin Aucoin. I was instantly fascinated and to this day, have all of his books in my personal library. I later began singing professionally with DJs and drum and bass crews. This was when other artists, performers, and fashion designers took notice of my makeup skills. They asked me to either do their makeup and/or be the key makeup artist at local fashion shows in downtown Phoenix. It wasn’t until I moved to Manhattan in 2004 that I decided to go full steam ahead with a career in beauty. I began training under the groundbreaking brow artist, Kristie Streicher, at the prestigious Warren Tricomi Salon. I then enrolled at the Atelier Esthetique Institute to formalize my experience and become licensed. The ensuing fifteen years were full of highlights, though not without challenges. From working countless 18-hour days to navigating arguably the busiest city in the world, I met the greatest challenge when I decided to move back home to Arizona in 2019. My mom has always been my driving force, and when she began experiencing health issues, I knew I needed to be by her side. It was a huge change of pace and starting over has been no small feat. Queue the pandemic, and many more trials and tribulations, and here I am today. I’ve never felt more focused and strong in my life, and there are countless people that’ve aided me along the way. Never discount the talent you surround yourself with.
Edward Tricomi, not just my boss but a true mentor, told me early on to not focus on the money; focus on your craft and the client experience. His words still resonate and are ingrained in how I’m developing The Tailored Brow today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always like to start in the neighborhood where I live. Depending on the weather and time of day, a stroll along the Grand Canal to enjoy Phoenix water fowl, view local murals, and experience seasonal blooms is a good place to begin. Next, I like to quench my thirst and hunger for brunch at Valentine, Famé, or El Presidio. I then like to walk off my brunch by visiting any of the local antique shops or outdoor markets on the Melrose Curve. If you’re feeling adventurous and have time, a long bike ride along the canal in any direction is bound to fulfill. Phoenix has over 200 miles of canals, more than Amsterdam and Brussels combined. For dinner, I love Persepshen, Belly, Progress, Tesota and Hana. If you’re looking for evening entertainment or a night cap, I like Stacy’s on Melrose, Thunderbird Lounge, Boycott Bar, Smith’s on 7th and Bar 1912.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Rhode Studios for personally reaching out to me and encouraging me to start my own business so we could create a community that we can all thrive in.
