We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Woodsum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my own business after becoming fed up with the powerlessness of being an employee and being at the mercy of other people’s decision-making. After working for a series of CEOs whose decision-making and philosophies I didn’t agree with, I decided it was time to control my own destiny.

The freedom that comes with running your own business and being able to control who you work with, what you work on, and when you work is simply unmatched.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a remote startup lab (www.nomadimpactventures.com) that starts, grows, and invests in impact-focused businesses and non-profits. The lab is focused on two core themes: helping people to improve their lives and helping to improve society and the world.

I’m most excited about a collection of new ventures that I’m focused on launching and scaling including www.FreedomIsEverything.com (digital nomad content site), www.RemoteWorkHub.com (remote job board), and a soon to be launched content site about climate change.

I’ve gotten to where I am today through a combination of hard work, intense focus, and capitalizing on luck/opportunities. My entrepreneurship journey has not been easy, but it has been a fun adventure! I’ve found that the most important aspect of overcoming challenges is embracing that challenges and hardship are normal and are part of the journey to success. By normalizing hardship, it makes it easier to persist despite dealing with extreme circumstances.

A key lesson that I’ve learned lately is that you can only scale so far on your own and to reach great heights, you have to sacrifice personal freedom to hire and partner with great people. I’m in the process of shifting away from being a doer into being a more traditional CEO/project manager.

I think the world should know that there are no rules in business. There are best practices in how to do things but ultimately you can build businesses however you want and that it’s important to custom build companies that work best for your style.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. They taught me the importance of a growth mindset and they both encouraged and helped me to start businesses in my teenage years.

Without their support during my childhood, who knows if I ever would’ve become an entrepreneur. Thanks mom and dad, love you guys! 🙏
