We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ginger, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have wanted to be an author since I was a young girl hooked on Judy Blume books like Forever and Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret. I studied journalism at ASU and spent years working in Arizona media and in marketing, but the call to write fiction was always there. I published my first book in 2013, fully expecting to write books while maintaining a full-time job in a different area so we could “keep paying the bills.” But my first book did well, and my second and third did even better. As I began to profit more from publishing than working the day job, I felt comfortable making the leap to be my own corporation. I’m a one-woman business, really. An S-corp, Little Miss Write, LLC. And I write love stories of all kinds for a living. It’s a dream!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I write young adult and college-aged romance. Specifically and most often, I write sports romance. I like to write about tough girls, the ones who join the boys team because they want to prove they can compete just as hard. I like to show insecurities in my characters, too. I wanted to write books that I always wanted to read when I was a teenaged girl, and I feel blessed to be able to do that. I touch on many hard topics, like anxiety and depression, disabilities, bullying, addiction, broken homes, poverty, violence and gang culture. I’ve been able to show stories from unique perspectives, but also show how powerful love and friendship can be. I often weave in my home turf, too. I like to write stories set in Arizona, even if it’s a mash-up of some of my favorite areas of my home state. My first series, the Waiting Series, is a small-town football romance about a girl named Nolan (after Nolan Ryan, her dad’s favorite player) who has a crush on the hometown hero quarterback. She’s quiet and prefers the background, while he is loud and the one everyone loves. I wrote this series to be very realistic and I set it in Coolidge, Arizona. There’s something unique about high school in Arizona, especially those towns on the outskirts. It’s one of my most popular series now, and the three books follow the characters from high school to college and on to adult life.
I think these books tell the story of me to my core more than anything I’ve written, and I’m up to 35 novels now. I’ve always been the tomboy, and I always felt the pressure of being the wallflower. My stories reflect this, and I have found my readers are as young as 12 and go all the way to senior citizens who identify with the emotions I portray. It’s the thing I’m most proud of.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Peoria, Arizona, and I LOVE my city! I would want my visitor to come in spring so we could take in some spring training. I’m biased in that I think the Peoria Sports Complex is the best field, but it’s so perfect. It’s easy to get in and out, the views are great from everywhere, the teams are solid – the Padres and the Mariners. And the food inside as well as outside in the P83 district is phenomenal. I like to write from the ballpark during spring training. I buy a grass seat, find some shade and charge up my laptop. It helps when you write sports romance to have the best background noise around.
I’d also want to take them up a mountain or two. I love hiking, and when the weather is right in Arizona, it’s sooo right! I love the trails in Peoria, my favorite trails being the Sunrise Mountain trail, West Wing and East Wing.
Sports is a huge part of my family’s culture, and we’re fans of everything local. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Suns pretty much play non-stop on our home TVs, and nothing beats going to a game live.
You also can’t come to Arizona without tasting our Mexican food. My family is partial to the original Garcia’s just west of downtown Phoenix, but there are so many amazing eateries to check out here.
For day trips, we’re big fans of Sedona, Jerome and Flagstaff. My son was raised on years of rides on the Polar Express in Williams, Arizona, too. And a trip to Tucson is a nice change of pace, especially when the Tucson Book Festival is happening.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Tim, has been my biggest champion. He encouraged me to finally finish the book that I had been dreaming of writing for most of my life. And when I finished it, he encouraged me to share it with others and get it published. He had faith in me when things began to take off, and when I was afraid to take the leap to write full-time and quit the day job, he told me that he knew I would be a success.
I found encouragement from many authors in the romance community too. Many of them were writers who were independent, who pushed through barriers and found ways to get their stories into readers’ hands. I learned a lot of business savvy from this community, and it’s one built on sharing and shouting out for our fellow writers. We celebrate one another, and it’s amazing to be a part of a community that doesn’t compete but rather rises together. A reader isn’t going to read one book only, they want many books. So success for one is success for all.
