We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Xu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Everything our company does, we do with one sole purpose: to help others as much as we can.
Our people-centric mentality allows us to differentiate ourselves from other hotel brands. As hotel owners ourselves, we understand the struggles of operating a hotel, particularly during this pandemic. That’s why we offer affordable brand standards, cost-efficient royalty fees, and flexible franchise terms so that hotel owners can see a larger bottom line. We are a one-stop shop, where hotel owners can receive sales and marketing support, revenue management advice, and a highly customizable system with 24/7 support.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GreenTree embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. The company was founded on both opportune chance and collective ideation: a way to meet the increasing demand of travel needs in the Asia Pacific. We believed that if we could meet those potential travel needs and meanwhile create an opportunity for hotel owners to benefit from the travel demand by providing them the tools, knowledge, and support, it would be a win-win situation. Whatever business you build, if you build it with that thought process as your foundation, you will find success.
In the last 15 years, the industry has gone through a lot of different changes, including changes in infrastructure (such as AI, OTA, and systems) and a significant increase in competition. This has made it even more difficult for regular hotel owners to maintain a profitable organization. And that is our current challenge—to adapt quickly by improving our technology and systems, motivating our teams to go above and beyond, and encouraging our franchisees to be more involved in the management of the hotel business. In that process, everyone can be a part of our win-win team.
I have personally observed and experienced the growth of GreenTree Hospitality Group, and it is truly remarkable. In just under 18 years, GreenTree has now become the 13th largest hotel company worldwide with more than 5,000 hotels and 52 million loyalty members. We are very excited to see what the future holds, especially as we continue to expand across the US.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am fairly new to living in Scottsdale, so I am still discovering new spots in the city. Any recommendations are highly appreciated! Our team recently tried Doughbird, which has excellent pizza and wings. If my friend was craving Japanese food, I’d take them to Hiro Sushi. Phoenix has some of the best coffee, so we’d have to stop at Press Coffee or Futuro. Right next door to Futuro, there is the Churchill, which is an open food court featuring different foods and drinks—it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends.
I have a major sweet tooth, and one of my recent finds is Raspados Solaris, an ice cream shop in Phoenix. The dessert is huge, so share with a friend! Afterwards, I would take them to Taliesin West (which has been on my list for a while). At night, we would go to the Phoenix Suns Arena to watch a Suns game.
Tempe is also a great city to visit –it has some of the best Asian food. I love the roast duck and char siu at Mekong Plaza. We would also grab bubble tea at Boba Tree and then walk along Tempe Town Lake to rent a pedal boat (read: giant swan) and cruise along the lake.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout-out to our GreenTree team, from our corporate officers to our front-line workers! During this especially difficult time, our employees have showcased incredible strength, compassion, and dedication to serving our guests and protecting their health and safety.
Special shout-outs to Nicole Lei, Alexandra Swain, Anna Chan, and all our General Managers for their leadership, strength, and support.
