We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Takahashi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been surrounded by art and music. In high school, I was the go-to prom and homecoming makeup girl for my circle of friends. Despite my love for makeup, I actually decided to pursue a career in the music industry, as an audio engineer. I quickly gathered that the studio life was not for me and decided to switch gears. Once again, makeup called to me and I was in the perfect location to attend makeup school, Makeup Designory in Burbank, CA. At 19 years old, I began my career as a freelance makeup artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I predominantly do makeup for weddings, special events, and photography. I am known to take a lighter approach to makeup. I love for my clients to look like the best version of themselves. I also spend a lot of time doing makeup for beauty photography where I allow myself the creative space to experiment with bold colors and various textures. As a young artist, I often struggled with self-confidence and constantly compared my work to others. I worried that my work was too different than what others were doing (little did I know that that is actually a good way to stand out). As I got older, I learned to love and appreciate my take on makeup. Watching my business grow over the years, has given me validation.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Early in my career, I was fortunate enough to connect with an incredibly talented makeup artist, Heather Pepe. She took me under her wing and mentored me for years. She showed me the ins and outs of the makeup industry in Los Angeles, taught me valuable lessons, and encouraged me to grow as an artist of my own. I’d also like to give a shoutout to the ladies on my Mode Artistry team! Together, we’ve created our own little community of artists that love and support one another. I’m lucky to have them along on this incredible journey. Cristina, Karla, Kim, Ashley, Rachel, and Danika — thank you!
