We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Kafalas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, how does your business help the community?
I created Compassion Corner Counseling with the hope of making a positive difference in the lives of others and in the community. I hope to address the negative stigmas associated with therapy services, normalize the use of therapy services, and normalize the presence of mental health concerns. We’re all human and we all face challenges that can sometimes seem unsurmountable alone. I would like to advocate for a world where going to a therapist is as common and accepted as going to your primary care physician. I promote practices that improve overall health and wellbeing. I believe that every person deserves the opportunity to heal, feel happy, and achieve their goals. Compassion Corner Counseling offers a safe, nonjudgmental space for people to learn how to create a life filled with greater peace, self-confidence, and love. I am pleased to offer online therapy services for adults, children (ages 6+) and families living in AZ. My main goal is to establish a healthy therapeutic relationship with my clients to foster therapeutic success. By helping people to feel heard, understood, and valued, they will begin to recognize their potential and realize that they have what it takes to lead a fulfilling life. I am also pleased to offer community groups that will help people improve their stress management skills, mindfulness skills, and self-compassion skills. I know that these groups will make a positive impact on the community by helping people to learn how to love themselves and treat themselves (and others) with compassion. Compassion Corner Counseling is a steppingstone towards my life mission of inspiring people to love and accept each other as unique individuals. With more love and compassion, the world will become a more peaceful place.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m still astounded that I have my own practice as a licensed therapist. I never expected to have a private practice until the end of my career. But I’m so glad that things worked out the way they did and I’m excited to be on this journey! I have worked my butt off to get here! I have a background of trauma, mental health challenges, and disabilities, but have managed to surpass them all and thrive! I’m proud of myself for how far I’ve come and I want to inspire other people to do the same thing for themselves. As a therapist, my focus involves working with people who strive to improve their self-esteem and sense of self. I offer an affirming space for people who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community and polyamory/ethical non-monogamy community. I have extensive experience working with children and families and provide quality care for a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, social challenges, and identity issues. My approach involves attuning to the individual needs of my clients and helping them identify their goals using compassion and collaboration. My therapeutic approach is very flexible and creative which helps me meet the unique needs of each individual client. One thing that sets me apart is that I’m open to challenging the norm by incorporating physical fitness, art, meditation and even American Sign Language (ASL) into therapy sessions. I’m actually fluent in ASL and very involved with the Deaf community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have no idea. lol I’ve been living in Arizona for about 4 years and I’m impressed with the amount of things there are to do here! Arizona has so much to offer! There are many beautiful hikes and outdoor activities. One outdoor activity that I love is Mt Lemmon in Tucson. I think it’s amazing how you can see desert and snow in the same day just by driving from the bottom to the top of the mountain at the right time of year. Fun fact, before I moved here, I didn’t even know that Arizona had snow! lol I also love that Arizona has so many places that you can take a weekend road trip to such as California, Las Vegas or even Mexico! But you don’t need to go far to find the fun, because there is so much to do right here in Arizona! They have many art shows and festivals (especially during the fall) which I love to attend! As an artist myself, I hope to be a vendor at more art events moving forward. I have been fortunate to sell my artwork (@ckaartdesigns) at First Friday which is an amazing art event that occurs the first Friday of each month in downtown Phoenix. Many art vendors, musicians and performers take over Roosevelt Row for a night of entertainment. They even have free entry to many museums!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout out to my family, friends, and partner. My parents and brother have been unbelievably supportive of my ambitions. Many of my friends have also gone out of their way to provide support to me and my goals. My partner has been a pivotal part of my success. His unconditional love and acceptance has given me the space to live my truth and work towards my dreams. Fortunately, we have similar dreams and values and will be working together as social entrepreneurs to make an even larger social impact. His support and guidance has meant the world to me and has empowered me to keep moving forward. I’m so very grateful for the many beautiful and supportive people in my life. Connections are the most valuable asset in life and in business.
