We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboni McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eboni, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started baking as a hobby…only baking cakes for family and friends. At some point, people started saying how I should start selling my sweets. From there, I began taking classes at Michaels and studying various techniques from YouTube and other internet sites and boom, Melodic Treats was born! I’ve had the support of my family and a friend who was also a baker/cake decorator.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a baker and cake decorator, it’s mainly trial and error. I’ve learned that everything isn’t always going to go the way I would expect it to go. I’m reminded of an old gospel song that says “nobody told me the road would be easy” and it’s true. But the true test is being able to overcome any obstacles. I’ve been able to make something from nothing. The epitome of “when life gives you lemons”. Apart of why I’m able to do what I do is because I didn’t have a lot when I was growing up. i didn’t know it then because my mom didn’t make us feel like we were struggling. But because of that, I’ve had plenty of times when I had to be creative and that contributed to the person I am today. That’s the good thing about doing what I do, I can bring a vision to life with little to nothing. When your heart is truly in it, you discover alternative ways to complete what needs to be done! At the end of the day, I want everyone to know that I’m not doing what I do just to do it. I do what I do because I love to do it! Yes it gets stressful and yes there are times I’m ready to throw my hands up and walk away. But that’s only because I am my own worst critic and I’m also a perfectionist, and when things aren’t turning out the way I envisioned them to, I go back to square 1. This goes to show how much of myself and my heart is put into what I do. I’ve always told people that I may not be the best at what I do, but I can guarantee that MY personal best is given. For me, it’s always taste 1st and everything else after because it doesn’t make sense to have something that looks good but tastes horrible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For food, I’d have to say Popo’s Fiesta Del Sol…the Mexican food is soooo good!!! There aren’t many places in Arizona that I’d say has good food lol, but Popo’s is definitely 1. I’d also have to add Ainsworth In Phoenix to the list…the brunch is on point! For entertainment, we’d had to stop by the Legion to hear Vaughn Willis and Ear Candy and/or Blue Martini to hear on Sunday nights. And on a Friday, we’d have to make an appearance at the Lola where my girl Nitra is the featured singer! The stay in Phoenix wouldn’t be right without attending a Franchise band event if there was something going on. The Prince Tribute Show is always lit!!! Other than that, we’d just enjoy Westgate and some places in Scottsdale.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When it comes to me and any of my successes, I have to give credit to my mom, Ursala & my sister, Diamond! Without them, much of what I do wouldn’t be possible. They’ve been very supportive. In December of 2020, I made the decision to quit my job after seeing how I was being treated. I wasn’t sure how I would survive financially but I had to take that leap of faith. Of course there was some hesitation and some feelings going into a space where there may not be any steady income, but they supported me. They’ve stepped up in a major way financially! Has it been uncomfortable? Yes! But God has been our provider and a sustainer. Many think that having your own business means it’s always just money coming in and that’s NOT the case lol. But neither myself nor my family has gone without! I also have to acknowledge my grandmother, Carrie too because she has helped me financially also. Any decisions made as it relates to my business has been for them…my family! I want to break generational curses and create generational wealth for my nephews, my future children & all of their future children. It has not been easy 1 bit, but I’m steady striving to reach the level of success that will blow my mind!
