We had the good fortune of connecting with Ethan Sinconis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ethan, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
There’s a bit of a misconception about what we do as designers and storytellers: it’s not really a quick turn-around. Most people don’t realize the amount of labor and care that goes into making these things a reality. That part is invisible to the majority; people watch something like I Am or I’m Fine and get immersed into the story, and the message it tells is emotionally moving. That’s one thing and it’s a very good thing. But it’s another thing to look back at it and realize the creativity and intention it took to make them feel that way in the first place. The lighting of the shots, the audio mix, the pacing with the narration, the way the images and the type comes on screen, and the way the message and the story is delivered that gets audiences to feel emotions they hadn’t felt previously. For me and my twin brother Aidan, making art that we feel really satisfied with takes a long time, many months or sometimes years. That often goes over looked and under appreciated by many.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We had known what we wanted to do since we were incredibly young. At that time we decided to dive in head first on our own. Aidan wanted to go into art, animation, writing, and directing. I wanted to pursue graphic design and typography, title design for film and TV, and editing. We had already channeled our interests well, and spent our spare time learning and studying from books, software, and media. In 2016 Aidan and I founded our own small production studio Sinconis Studios. We made our first film in 2021 when we were 16 years old, and have continued creating work since.

Our work consists of branding/commercial work for clients, digital art and animation, title sequences, graphic design work, and most notably, our internationally recognized and National Student Emmy winning high school produced documentaries, Passions, I’m Fine, and I Am.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Going on a long hike in Phoenix or Scottsdale early in the morning is an escape from “daily life” and is a great quiet location. Westgate, Kierland Commons, and Downtown Phoenix are great if you and your friends are looking for a “louder” place to hang out, shop, or get food. Buck and Rider and Aunt Chilada’s are amazing restaurants that should be on everyone’s itinerary. Going to the Phoenix Film Festival is a fantastic opportunity to watch really inspiring work and network with genuinely amazing people. The Phoenix Art Museum and the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum are great creative spots as well. Going to any hotel with a waterpark is an absolute blast. And walking around in Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is oddly soothing. Also, Aidan loves going to the Lego store.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our high school film teachers at Liberty High School PSBN, Jim Byrne, Tim McLaughlin, Devon Henry and Kenyon Ozanne. Our professors at Huntington University, Phil Wilson, Christian Washington, and Jonathan Vinson. And last but certainly not least, our family and friends, who are all incredible in so many ways. All of them have made a significant impact on our early film and design careers. We can’t thank all of them nearly enough for the mentorship and guidance they brought to the table. They all really pushed and shaped us in ways we would’ve never anticipated!
