We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenna Spets and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenna, what inspires you?
For years I’ve viewed my surroundings as if I were looking at them through a lens. Wherever and whenever I would be out, one of my first thoughts would be how I would frame somebody for a shot. Bars, streets, hiking trails, buildings, beaches, Disneyland…wherever I was, I’d be thinking up at least 10 different shots in my head. I’m constantly inspired by the things around me. I love looking at locations that aren’t your typical place for a photo op and coming up with a creative and unique shot within them. I truly believe that with the right eye and vision, you can create something beautiful out of anything. With the idea that you can make any shot unique, beautiful, fun and interesting… I’m constantly feeling inspired by my surroundings.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a lifestyle photographer that specializes in senior/self-love portraits! Being a lifestyle photographer, I aim to capture authentic shots and candid moments. I feel like what sets me apart from others is my approach to each session. I want to create photos that incorporate movement, honesty and my client’s individuality. To try and capture all of that, I treat each session more like two friends getting to know each other. I want to create a moment and bond with each client and get to know them as best as I can in the short time we shoot together. I want the photos to reflect the person I am shooting. My sessions include a lot of questions, silly games and exchanging of stories. I joke around a lot and will tell silly stories. I’ll do anything to try and make my clients as comfortable and at ease as possible. If there’s one thing I’d want people or potential clients to know, it’s that I am your biggest fan. From the second you get in front of my camera, to the moment I deliver your gallery, I am obsessed with you! Every.Single.Time I pick up my camera and look through the lens at my clients, I am always blown away by their beauty. Everyone is so unique and so stunning that I can’t help but be their biggest fan. I’d want people to know that my photography and my brand is 100% about self-love. I offer Self-Love Portrait Sessions that are exclusively there to support you and show you how beautiful you are. So many people struggle with self-love and seeing themselves for how they truly are. I’m here to support and love my clients for who they are. For that reason, I do very minimal touchups and cosmetic editing. I do not believe in heavily photoshopping a person. I don’t believe in adding into the already large pool of unrealistic beauty standards. I want my clients to be confident in themselves and realize that we are all perfectly flawed individuals…and that it’s a good thing. A big lesson I’ve learned in my business so far is that you’ll never stop learning and growing. When it comes to art, you never just reach a moment of completion. You and your art are always growing and changing and discovering. Each experience I have teaches me something and shapes me into the photographer and business owner that I am.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite place to be is northern Arizona. I would start out by spending the night in Jerome, Az (which happens to also be my favorite place to shoot!) in the John Riordan House. The home is over 120 years old and overlooks the entire town. It has a huge patio with stunning views. Who wouldn’t want to stay in a house that old, located in a ghost town?! Jerome also offers so many small businesses to checkout and The Flatiron coffee shop has the best breakfast options. I’d want to move on to Sedona next. Sedona is absolutely gorgeous, but my first stop would definitely be the Sedona Fudge Company. It is my favorite place to visit while in Sedona and I always eat way too many chocolate covered pretzels. While there are a lot of different trails and places to explore in Sedona, my favorite location to hang out in is Crescent Moon Ranch. I could spend the entire day there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Ethan. 6 months before our wedding, I told him I wanted to start a photography business. We were so busy planning our wedding and I was wanting to bring another thing to the table. Since the beginning, he’s been there helping me and encouraging me with this business. He’s understood how important it is to me, he’s been supportive when I’ve been stressed out over it, he’s stood by me as I poured a lot of my time and a lot of our money into starting this business. He has never been anything but happy for me. I think it’s really important to have someone cheering you on. My husband has definitely been that person.
