We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Kwan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
We started selling Asian baking mixes due to the pandemic. We used to sell at events for our Asian bakery, but had to pivot during these times. We came up with the idea of Asian baking mixes since more people are at home baking, but the grocery stores do not have baking mixes that were diverse. Most were pancakes, cookies, brownies, and more. We pivoted our Asian bakery and converted our recipes to baking mixes that we could ship nationwide. By pivoting, we are now able to reach more customers and serve a niche need. People can order our Asian baking mixes from happybuns.ecwid.com and have it shipped to their home, especially in areas where Asian bakeries and ingredients are limited. One of our popular Asian baking mixes is our almond cookies. The baking mixes take the fuss out of baking with pre-measured gourmet ingredients, foolproof recipes, and easy-to-understand directions. Happy Buns was voted as the Best Asian Treats in Phoenix Magazine’s 2019 Best of the Valley. We also include video instructions with our Asian baking mixes, teaching techniques and providing a visual demonstration of our mixes. Each month we have a new dessert kit that people can try new Asian desserts and learn a variety of techniques. September’s theme is snow skin mooncakes. The Mid-Autumn Festival is on October 1st, 2020 and is one of the largest Asian holidays. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people view the full moon and eat mooncakes. This is a time for family to get together and the origins of the festival come from celebrating the autumn harvest. The roundness of mooncakes symbolize reunion and happiness and is a tradition to give as a gift. Snow skin mooncakes are not baked and have a similar texture to Japanese mochi or mochi ice cream. They are served cold, which is where it gets the name snow skin. More information on our monthly events can be found here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/nomnomevents
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are one of very few Asian bakeries in Phoenix and one of the first to start selling Asian desserts at events and farmers markets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We dedicate our success to our family. Without them, we would not be able to run our family business.
