We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ultimately, I felt like I was meant for more. After graduating college I went into the non-profit field and to this day love the work I do with nonprofits. However, I felt the wrath of the grind after about 3 years in the industry. Wake up, go to work, go to the gym, go home, repeat. Although I was doing fulfilling work, I didn’t feel fulfilled. After 3 years as an event manager in the nonprofit field, I started up an online business in clean beauty on the side.
It was a choice I needed to make to show up for my future self. If I ever had any hopes of paying off my student loans, taking my parents on a vacation, paying for a wedding, or financing a home, I needed to make some changes. I have a love for social media and online presence, so I wanted something that could help me make an income while making an impact through those channels.
I found just that. I can see it now. I was driving home late from work one night and was frustrated with how little of my student loans I had paid off after 4 years of being in the world world. I’ve never done affirmations before, I barely even prayed out loud, but I felt I needed to say this out loud to make it real and for me to make a move in my life. “I need to figure out a way to earn more, so I can do more,” I said out loud in my car.
Later that night I was sent a message on Instagram from a friend who looked like she was living her best life. Her direct message stated that she sells shampoo on the side and has actually made a pretty decent income from it. The hairs on my body went straight up. This was a sign. This was exactly what I was looking for.
She told me it was clean beauty that was naturally based, anti-aging, vegan, and clinically proven to repair and restore hair. This was right up my alley. I’m an ingredient junkie and try to use natural alternatives over name brands in all aspects of my life. So I tried it out and noticed a difference immediately. My hair was softer, more manageable, and shinier. I was obsessed and have been sharing these products and growing a successful clean beauty business ever since. It has been the best decision for myself and my future as it has allowed me the flexibility to make an income while making an impact and find something I’m passionate about and create a business not based solely on the borrowed land of social media platforms.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love social media. I love the creative outlets that social media offers. As a blogger and beauty content creator, I have a very colloquial style. I write like how I talk in hopes of giving off the vibe you are always chatting with a friend.
Blogging is no easy task. You have to show up even when you don’t want to. There were plenty of days, sometimes even weeks I procrastinated my blogging or got behind on posts. Whether I wasn’t feeling creative or I was so busy I never took the time to sit down and dedicate my time to my blog, showing up consistently was very difficult sometimes.
In order to overcome those tough days, I found the magic of a miracle morning routine. Every morning I wake up and before I go to my phone I keep those brief moments of haziness to myself. I like to spend time praying, visualizing, affirming, meditating, and journaling. This helps keep me on a positive track with my business and allows me to create before I consume.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a Native of the Las Vegas, NV area, I am always on the hunt for the newest spots on the map.
I would start out with dinner at Javier’s at Aria followed by drinks at the Chandelier Bar inside the Cosmopolitan. Make sure you get the Verbena and listen to the instructions of how this should be drunk.
The next day I would suggest a late brunch at Hearthstone at Red Rock Casino or Bottiglia at Green Valley Ranch with bottomless mimosas. Both are local favorites and on the outskirts of the city to get you off the strip. From there, shopping at Downtown Summerlin would be a great way to spend the afternoon with some shopping. For dinner, I would suggest Mas Por Favor for some authentic Mexican tacos, and fabulous, but spicy cocktails. This is an underground lounge that you wouldn’t know is there unless someone told you. Shh!
For a rowdy night out I would take friends downtown to East Fremont Street. This is where most locals will go when hanging out downtown. Tons of bars with a variety of atmospheres from club-like, to house music, to specialty cocktails, to tequila tastings. If we are looking for a calmer night but still a good time, PKWY on 215 and Flamingo on a Friday night are full of great drinks specials and a lively crowd.
If you are looking for outdoor activities, beware of the summer heat. Escape the heat and head 40 minutes out of town to Mt. Charleston and do the Mary Jane Falls hike.
Other additional ideas would include Area15, Fashion Show Mall, Resorts World, and the Salt Room!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My clean beauty tribe. My team. My support group. We call ourselves The Firestarters because we stay close to the fire; our dreams, our passions, our goals.
On a day-to-day basis, I operate as a one-woman show. I take on everything myself and delegation is something I struggle with. This clean beauty team has allowed me to grow into the leader I feel destined to become. They challenge me to get out of my comfort zone and try things I typically wouldn’t. They encourage me when I feel defeated and help keep my dreams on track.
They have been my rocks, my cheerleaders, and sounding boards. Their belief in me in this chapter of my life has helped me to see I am making an impact on not just my life and future, but theirs.
