We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Cantor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always wanted to start a business, ever since I was a kid. I didn’t realize until later in life that the driving force behind my entrepreneurial interests was a hidden desire to prove myself to my dad. When I discovered this secret motivation, during some intensive personal development work in Werner Erhard’s methodology, I saw that a new context was needed for my participation in my company. So I created the context that my company was the opportunity for me to develop leadership skills. Eight years of business ownership later, there still seems to be a daily opportunity for the development of leadership skills.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Evolve Custom Automotive Restoration is the paramount classic car enterprise offering comprehensive automobile reconstruction for our customer’s beloved vehicles. We are an energetic and passionate team that shares a commitment to excellence and integrity. We do things once and do them right. Those phrases are excerpted from our company charter, a document that constitutes who we are, and is the standard by which we measure our integrity.

By far the greatest challenge for our company is finding team members who are a match for who we are. Our charter was carefully crafted over a period of two full days, by the entire team working together to get it just right. And it’s what we live by here. Out in the world, we just can’t create what we want everywhere; we can’t make everything complete and perfect. But in this shop – in our company and with this team – we can create a unique environment that’s a function of our shared commitment to something really extraordinary. And those customers who share that commitment find us and become our sponsors.

It took me 12 years of being in business to realize that the greatest value I can bring to the company is curating an environment of creativity. After all, what we do here is very creative: problem-solving, working with physical objects to produce beauty and functionality, and restoring people’s dreams. It’s really a magical environment – a workshop of masculine creation and feminine beauty. So the most valuable offering I can bring to the company every day is to guarantee an environment in which this creativity naturally arises.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego has much to offer, from the beaches to the mountains. I’ve lived here my entire life, and I’m still discovering places. So I recommend before visiting, taking a moment to narrow down interests to specific categories: theme parks (Sea World, Aquatica, Zoo), beaches, mountains, night life (downtown Gaslamp District), shopping, eateries. Then you can focus on one or two of those categories, depending on the length of your stay.

Here’s a random sampling of my favorite places in San Diego:
Coronado (Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Beach, Orange Avenue shopping district)

Shout House (very party-like atomsphere with live entertainment on dualing grand pianos)

Cabrillo Monument and Sunset Cliffs (overlooking San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean)

D.Z. Akin’s Delicatessen

Old Town (historic Spanish-style village)

La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool (sea lion refuge)

Mission Trails (assortment of mountainous hiking trails)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Two primary entities have been the source of my aliveness and effectiveness: my parents, who are extraordinary people with extraordinary commitment; the people behind the work of Landmark Worldwide, without whom I literally and metaphysically wouldn’t be alive.
