We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
It’s less of a habit and more of a strong personality trait. I’m stubborn. Not like “I’ll open this pickle jar myself” kind of stubborn, but an “I have this dream, this idea, and I’m going to push and work for it no matter how long it takes me to get there” kind of stubborn. That’s exactly what I did. I decided at 17 that I wanted to be a massage therapist and run my own business, and I did everything I could to make it happen. The pieces all finally fit together and when everything else was closing down, I decided to open my own studio in January of 2021. If that isn’t stubborn I don’t know what is! It’s gotten me pretty far in life because I just don’t give up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think that my passion towards helping people sets me apart from other licensed massage therapists out there. My goal is to put myself out of a job, and I take it seriously! I love every massage modality and treatment out there, from relaxing hot stones and foot scrubs to deep structural therapy and injury rehab. If one approach isn’t working, I like that I’m able to take a step back and draw on every class I’ve taken, book I’ve read, experience I’ve had and come up with a new treatment plan. I’m always looking for something new to learn.
It definitely wasn’t easy to get here, though. I’ve had a few challenges to overcome (as it tends to happen), from loss to injuries to events that made me question if this was truly the career for me.. but I’m proud to say that I’ve met my obstacles head on and stubbornly found my way around each one.
My business name reflects this a bit. Padme not only means lotus (a beautiful flower with roots buried deep in muddy water) in Sanskrit, it’s also the name of my favorite (fictional) courageous leader. It’s the perfect symbolism referencing two of my favorite things: nature and pure imagination. I believe that you can be a business-owning professional while letting your individuality shine through.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Sedona would definitely be first on that list. Do some hiking, explore the little shops in town. Back down in the valley we would have to check out a few of my favorite arcades, get some sushi, maybe check out a roller derby bout! I’m a homebody at heart but I love going and seeing historical sites and anything unique.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I know I wouldn’t be where I am now without the people who support me and cheer me on. My mom Dori and the rest of my family. Kasaundra, Dala, Amber, and all of my friends who have unceasingly been in my corner. Cherie, who saw potential and has helped me nurture and grow my goals into realities. Lastly (and most importantly), my kids. They make me want to be my best self every single day, and as a single mom I’m here to lead by example and show them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
