We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariam Chekmeyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mariam, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career simply because that is what I am passionate about. Growing up in school I never found an ounce of interest in math, science, history, ect. Looking back at it now the only time I really enjoyed being there was during art class. It was not until high school and my first job when I really started to realize that colors, patterns, shapes, and designing things in my head just brought me so much joy. Since then anything that had to do with being creative I have done, however adding my love for flowers and my creative brain is when I really decided to make this my life long career!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Let me start off by saying, it was NOT easy. My little brand is based off of blood, sweat ALOT of tears ( yes, i am a big cry baby.) I jump started into this business not knowing anything other than being creative 2 weeks before Mother’s day. If you know the flower industry, that is one of the most busiest holidays along side Valentine’s day. I took big losses in my first month of being in business. However I gained so much knowledge from that first month as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a huge foodie and believe that the kitchen is the heart of a home. Other than hosting and throwing dinner parties some of my favorite go to places to eat would be, Isabella’s kitchen ( sitting next to the fire place, enjoying a glass of wine & a nice view is everything.) For a more busy, fast paced in n out type of spot nothing beats AZ taco boys ( I LIVE for tacos.)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to dedicate this shoutout to my family. My mom has never said no to any of my passions or dreams. Even if I failed and did not want to continue, she has always just been supportive. I believe each one of my family members have an outrageous amount of influence on my creative side. My boyfriend also has a very big role in my career today. I brought up the idea of a flower shop & he believed in me. He did everything in his power to start up Gem florals. Today I now run a very busy online based flower shop and could not have done it without the help of all the amazing people in my life, from cutting flowers to running deliveries.
