We had the good fortune of connecting with Marra Avery-Drayton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The chance of not reaching your goal will always be there, there is something relieving about the lesson learned that follows shortly after. So regardless of whether you win or lose, there is always something to gain from taking a risk. And more importantly, the possibility of what you could gain if you reach that goal is almost always worth it. Do the research, make an educated decision, and take that risk! You’ll thank yourself later!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that everyone can make a living doing something that brings them true happiness! I am a Brand Designer & Photographer, and I am passionate about helping small businesses stand out and make big moves in their industry! I build unique design elements and logos that help give each business a custom visual brand that helps them reach their target market and increase their revenue. Everything I do is based on marketing, advertising, psychology, and design. I mainly work with creative small businesses, and I’m grateful for the unique creators I get to meet every day! From jewelry makers to chefs, to woodworkers, and even people who make art out of bugs: it never disappoints!
Getting here wasn’t easy. Growing up, I was rejected by almost every college I applied to. I used to work in an office from 9-5 and stare out the window to daydream about escaping. It wasn’t until I stopped listening to everyone around me and started looking to myself to see what brought me true happiness. I took risks and failed miserably multiple times. Every single bit of that was worth it because it brought me to where I am now.
My goal is to let every person I meet know that what they love to do is important. The trick is to find the right audience that will celebrate you and relate to what you have to offer! I strive to show audiences just how special and unique every business I work with is!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a beautifully crafted restaurant in Scottsdale like the Canal Club, then take a day trip to Flagstaff to hike, and end the night with a quiet night around downtown chandler!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Friends are easy to come by when things are going well. People want to visit and schedule plans. But when things are not going well, the messages stop coming as often, and the plans seem to fade away. I’ve been lucky to have two people, Gabrielle & Deanna, that have been there for me not only when I succeed but when I fail to remind me of how far I’ve come and will continue to go. Thank you for showing me the importance of taking care of my mental health and keeping my head up during dark times!
