We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Beausoleil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started working for myself, I was a workaholic. I worked day and night, during meals, and on the weekend. I truthfully burned myself out and undid a lot of my progress due to unhealthy habits. Now, almost four years later, I take boundaries very seriously. I have a morning routine that includes not looking at my phone for at last 30 minutes, meditation, and time with my family. I also set a time in the afternoon that I will be finished working and do everything I can to stick to that time. When I am finished I close my computer (or iPad) and repeat the mantra, “I’ve done everything I am going to do today, I’ve done an amazing job. Everything else can wait until tomorrow.” Implementing these new habits are the deepest form of self-care, allowing myself to have time to live a life away from work as well as giving myself time to check-in and see how I am doing on a physical and mental level.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the digital illustrator and artist at Natalie Rae Creative. I consider my art to be somewhat minimalistic in style. It is always my number one goal to express the things that are most important to me through art. As a result themes of activism, equality, and love tend to often be reflected through my artwork. I truly believe that the meaning behind the art is much more important than the art itself. Switching over to art full time has been a lesson in courage. It has definitely not been easy to pursue full-time, but I have already begun to see how anything is possible with passion, dedication, and good marketing. 😂 One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that if I am not healthy, my business can’t be healthy. It was not always my focus, but now more than ever I put my own mental and physical health above my business. Contrary to popular belief, I truly feel that this only elevates me as an artist. At times, I feel imposter syndrome peak in its head. I ask myself, “What right do I have to claim to be an artist or an activist of any kind?” Over time, I have learned how to pause and give myself a loving, positive pep talk about how I have EVERY right as a human on this planet to contribute my gifts and advocate for that which I believe will make the planet better. In fact, it might just be my obligation to do so.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the West Valley, AZ. My favorite coffee spots are Driftwood Coffee in Peoria (I’m sipping their coffee as I type this) and Gathered Grounds in Surprise. I promise neither of these coffee shops will disappoint! If you are looking for a good view and have some time, I highly recommend making your way over to Horseshoe Bend in Page, Arizona for some incredible Grand Canyon sights! It’s absolutely breathtaking, and the hike is easy enough for anyone in the family to make the trip. If you are looking for a sweet treat, I highly recommend Abbie Cakes Co in Litchfield Park. The treats an INCREDIBLE and Brittanae and her team and just as sweet!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this to my husband and daughter, who have been endlessly supportive of my crazy ideas and the shifting of my business from social media to art as well as to my parents and siblings who literally support me in every move I make. Rachael, Rose, Josh, Emily, Mom, and Dad, I couldn’t do this without you! I especially want to thank my mentor and therapist, Cailin O’Hara of Suntree Healing Arts, who has guided me to dive deeper into my true calling and my soul’s purpose.
